Silent reflux - update on Ellianna

We went to the doctors today. Within 60 seconds he diagnosed bad reflux. Two big cues - excessive weight gain (went from bw of 7 2 to 10 14 at 6 weeks) and hoarse voice. Lots of people think reflux leads to poor weight gain. He explained the contant need to nurse is due to the bm soothing the burn of the acid. The hoarseness is the acid burning the vocal cords  We are to limit her bottles of bm to 2 1/2 ounces so as not to cause tummy spill over (not sure what to do when I nurse as I cannot measure). Started Zantac three times per day. In addition, I am continuing to sleep with her on me until the symptoms let up for her. Makes me want to cry that acid is burning her. Poor little girl, :sneak:Hope the medicine works quickly. :)

I'm sorry your LO has reflux, but I'm glad your doctor was able to give you a diagnosis and the medication for it. Hopefully this happens at our appointment on tuesday (sadly it was the earliest one we could get), because I really think Anna has it, too.

A hoarse voice? Little man sometimes sounds congested if laying on his back for awhile and often will only fall asleep if he is held upright. I wonder if it is the same thing? Hmm

Karry - I never would have thought that a hoarse voice would indicate reflux either. The doc listened and noticed it right away. (I thought it sounded like asthma or a wheeze). It sounds just painful to know that it is acid burning the vocal cords. Hope your pedi can help your little man. I hate the thought of any baby in pain. (I am such a sucker for babies - if I was in the store and heard any parent said the baby needed something, I would just have it placed on my card. No baby in the world should ever be in pain - it just stinks that they are).

I texted my cousin who is a nurse and told her everything he does and she also said it sounds like reflux and she's gonna talk to her mom...my aunt that is also a nurse to see what she thinks. My mom does have horrid reflux and has to take zantac daily. Poor kid what a horrid thing to inherit. :( He is so good that he doesn't fuss even tho he may be in pain. :(

Leif has had a nice weight gain very similar to that. And he wants to eat all the time. And sometimes it's up to 4oz. He will go 3-4hrs between feedings. He does not have a hoarse voice and he doesn't spit up or throw up at all. Maybe 3 times total since birth. Could he still have reflux with the weight gain and the lg amt for feedings? If I give him 3 oz, he seems fussy afterwards and still roots around. I'm at a lost and reading these posts about reflux have me questioning.
