My baby still wakes up a lot at night!

I am reading your posts about babies sleeping for long stretches or all night and its stressing me out big time! Eva is 6 weeks almost 7 and she still wakes every. two. hours. All night! Only like twice has she slept 3-4 hours at a time. Any advice? Do you think I should hold her off nursing for a few hours before bed so she gets nice and full? She tends to snack in the evening and I am wondering if this causes her to not get really full right before bed.

Do you have a bedtime routine? That really helped Morgan. That and swaddling. She hates being swaddled, so I have to do it after she's asleep. I have the SwaddleMe spread out in her crib so when I put her to bed I can just lay her on it and wrap her up. It works wonders.

Camden only sleeps thru if he's inclined. he will sleep 10 hours in his carseat. I've ordered a sleeper called play to sleep sleeper or something by Bright Starts from Wal-Mart for $33. It should arrive tomorrow. does she have any reflux or respiratory issues? right now we are trying to figure out some breathing issues Camden has. he's hd xrays and is trying some reflux medication now. I'm hoping he sleeps in sleeper but if not, the Dr has no problem with carseat. whatever works

Ellianna was not sleeping at all at 6 1/2 weeks. She just started sleeping in 4 or so hour stretches. Even last night, she fell asleep around 8. Got up at 10:30, 2:19; 5:31 and 7:40. Some nights are better and some not so good. Last night was somewhat in the middle. I do let her cluster feed at night since my supply is lower then - I figure the constant nursing helps the supply.

babies are not made to sleep through the night. They wake up because they are hungry. My son did not sleep through the night, tell he was 2 years old. There is nothing you can do, she will start sleeping on her own. I know it is hard but it is mommyhood.

Bodhi might give us a 4 hour stretch early on, but then it is every 3 hours. Cluster feeding is normal in the evening. Bodhi got a 4 oz bottle from daycare at 6 pm and still insisted on nursing for 30 min when we got home. He is not really hungry, but he craves the closeness after i have been away all day.

My 2.5 year old STILL wakes a couple nights a week

Like Sammy, my first born did not sleep through the night....ummm..he still doesn't and he's 3! LOL Only once or twice a week will he STTN, but he usually wakes up sometime during the night and comes to our bed.

When he was a newborn/baby he also woke every 2-3 hours constantly. It was a long time before he slept for longer stretches....every baby is different. We implemented a routine WAY late, but once we did it really helped him! Also, putting him down at the same time every night also helped.

You could try dream feed???....I think is what it's called? Something from some book (ha ha I'm full of info) but it's basically nursing her while she's still asleep, like before you go to sleep, and see if she will get a longer stretch after that.

I've been trying to get Porter to do his cluster feeding before I put him to bed instead of in the middle of the night or all night like he was doing and that seems to have helped. I basically camp out on the couch with him all night while I watch tv and I let him nurse as much as he wants and he'll take a few cat naps here and there. Then when I'm ready to go to bed (because this maximizes how much sleep I can get, putting him down before I go to bed means I get less sleep!), I swaddle him and nurse him until he's asleep and he's been sleeping 5-6 hours. Which is great compared to 2 or 3! I'm hoping he keeps doing it. I can totally manage on 6 hours of sleep. Haha.

I tried dream feeding once... He was so passed out that I couldn't get him to wake up enough to open his mouth. Haha. Then of course he woke up as soon as I put him back down and was awake forever. So I haven't tried that again! Lol.

All if my kids were 2 before they could sleep through the night. Payson is up every 3/4 hours. Hang in there.

No worries, every baby is different! Like a PP said, I also keep my kiddos on a routine and I reinforce it by following the same "steps" and creating the same sleep environment. DS has always responded great to it and I'm hoping Gia does as well. At 3, DS will lay down for naps on his own and will tell me he's ready for bed at night (at his actual nap & bed times). And its of course changed over time, as needs have changed, but keeping & reinforcing the routine itself was key, imo, to his sleeping success. But thats just him, and like I said every baby is different but I am doing the same with Gia now in hopes she will follow suit :)

I don't expect her to sleep through the entire nighr, I was just shocked bc it felt like most other babies here were! My 5 year old still wakes up. I just want to get longer stretches than 1-2 hours, it wearing on me.

The other night it was every 1.5 hrs

When things were rough with Connor, whatever the "baby rough patch" may be (sleeping, crying, tantrums now lol)...I would just repeat to myself "this too shall pass"....and it will! It may be days, weeks, or months.....but eventually it will pass, it won't be like this for long! :)

The 1-2 hour stretches are very hard. We had that with our first. I was a walking zombie my first year. I think when they can roll to sleep on their bellies is when longer stretches come. Hope you can some sleep soon. Sleep deprivation is soooo hard.

I tell myself that somewhere there is a woman just praying for a healthy daughter - and I can handle the cries. Then I try to think of plans for her first Disney trip to meet the princesses. That calms me.

Re: My baby still wakes up a lot at night!

When she wakes is she all out crying or just fussing? It may sound stupid but my first breakthrough in getting more sleep was to not react too quickly. One night I happened to be in the bathroom when I heard Camden wake up. He wasn't crying, just fussing so I decided to finish what I was doing. When I got to his room a few minutes later he had fallen back asleep. It was always my instinct to go to him immediately but now I know that he will often fall back asleep

I've had a good sleeper and I've had a not good sleeper. Even my good sleeper didn't start sleeping well until 10 weeks. My not good sleeper nursed every 90 minutes 24/7 until 9 months. And then later it was every 2-3 hours at night until 15 months. Sleep will come in time. Then of course with growth spurts you may take a few steps back. I remember the 6 month growth spurt with my second- she had to be latched on all night. I'd doze and wake up to switch breasts when she fussed.

Re: My baby still wakes up a lot at night!

Sometimes it is just the luck with the baby.
But a routine has been helpful to us. Aubrey stays away from 6-8:30. Even if it means fussing and crying the entire time some nights, we keep her awake. Bath at 7:45pm and she gets her reflux meds at 8, wait 30 min (LONG MINUTES!!) and feed her a bottle. She is out between 8:30-9:30 and sleeps until 3-4am.

I also agree on if the baby is not all out crying then try the wait and see approach. Aubrey is kind of fidgety and will make noises and sometimes even let out a shriek, but then we wait and she 99% of the time falls back asleep cause she wasn't really awake in the first place.

Hope baby starts sleeping longer, sleep deprivation is some serious torture!
