Getting Over Thumb-Sucking

Quote:

Thumb-sucking is a completely natural act of self-soothing that many babies begin when they are still in the womb. But while an infant sucking his thumb may look sweet and innocent, a five-year-old sucking his thumb may become the object of pity or ridicule. So at what point does thumb-sucking become a bad habit? We didn't have this with our oldest son but our youngest has been sucking his thumb since 2 months old. We aren't concerned about it yet since he's only 10 months old but we will defintely keep this in mind as he gets older.

My daughter thumbsucked up

My daughter thumbsucked up until she started preschool at the age of 3. Her thumb looked flat from sucking it so much! I tried many methods to stop her from sucking her thumb especially when she started preschool because of the germs. I took a picture of her sucking her thumb and showed it to her one day and that just really did the trick! She just stopped. Can't explain how or why but boy was I glad that she stopped!!

Our dentist said that

Our dentist said that thumbsucking is fine until the permanent teeth start coming in. She suggested trying to contain it, meaning only allowing it in the child's bedroom. So, anytime the child wants to do it, she/he can, but might not want to miss out on anything because of it. Seems to be working for us!

Re: Getting Over Thumb-Sucking

Thumb sucking is really natural for a baby. I wouldn't call that a problem.
