Why Tummy Time is so Important from a Physical Therapist's Perspective

So we all have heard, "back to sleep, tummy to play," but is that really happening?  We know that sleeping on the back is the best position for babies to reduce the risk of SIDS, however, babies tend to not get enough playtime on their bellies.   This supervised playtime also known as 'tummy time' is very important for gross motor and cognitive development.

I really loved this article because I use the phrase "tummy time"also in my home!I have been putting my daughter on her tummy to build her muscles for a couple of weeks now and just noticed this week that she is able to roll over on her own!Khloe is just under 4 mths and I think she will be a really fast baby and walk early.

I know a lot of mothers that say they feel too sorry for their babies if they do "tummy time". They say that they can see them struggling and that it is not fair.

I, of course, agree with this article. It "hurts" your baby more if you don't do "tummy time" because you are not doing everything in your power to help them develop. Parents should be made more aware so that they can give the best to their children.

Tummy time is so important in order to strengthen the baby's neck muscles, helping him/her learn to lift their heads. Great tips!

Re: Why Tummy Time is so Important from a Physical Therapist's Perspective

I never did tummy time at all. Neither child liked it & they weren't in swings or bouncers nearly at all. I wore them in suitable, supportive carriers & they hit all their milestones just fine. I think it's fine it it works for a given family, but I don't think our ancestors were laying babies face down on dirt floors so I have a hard time believing it's the "only" or "best" way to help them develop good muscle tone & cognitive skills. I don't think there is anything wrong with it - I also don't think you have to do it either. And babies with flat spots likely just need more holding, not more time on the floor.
