What is this "birthing O" that I keep hearing you talk about?

LaLa June 26th, 2006 07:03 AM

Not wonderfully made, but I just gotta hop in and reply! :D

Birth "O" is basically the orgasmic feeling that a lot of women (not all) feel during natural childbirth. A lot of the hormones that our body produces to help labor are the same hormones that our bodys release during sex. Its rarely discussed, the sexual aspect of childbirth, and even more rarely that the "birth 'o'" is discussed :D

Some women say its the best well kept secret, and other women are just so surprised b/c its not something thats commonly taught.

But, its that feeling of euphoria... and some women describe it as "orgasmic" while others will say they had an all out orgasm.

:)

Hope that helps. Ina May Gaskin talks a lot about it in her book "Guide to Childbirth".

Lala...

 It felt, for me, like an orgasm...and I was so surprised by it I practically forgot what was going on!

Yes. Basically what the other two women said.

For my first experience - it felt rather euphoric and 'wow, whoa!' like. (don't really know how to explain it) and it felt really quite good - like a great internal massage (sorry if TMI).

For my second experience - the best I can equate it to is the fact that it felt rather orgasmic. This huge build up and release that felt GOOD. Weird eh?

Interestingly, ppl think that it cannot possibly happen because 'the size is so much bigger than a penis'. OTOH, putting a tampon in when a woman is tense can be uncomfortable to downright painful. For a woman who is not in the mood, fearful, tense, or other reasons, intercourse can be uncomfortable to downright painful. The point? Point of view, how you view birth, I believe, can be a HUGE indicator if you are a candidate for experiencing a Birthing O or not. If you are tense, fearful, or cannot equate joy and 'good feelings' with childbirth - then I can near guarantee you won't experience it.

I wonder how many women that, if they were not afraid to talk about it, would actually have experienced it. Right now it is considered an anomoly (sp).. but the more I hear, the less I think that is fact.

I think you're right. I know i felt it when both my girls, and my uncle's wife experienced it as well. We are the only women I know who have had no pain meds for delivery. . .

Ive had three natural childbirths. One very long and hard, one pretty fast and easygoing, and one really really fast.

No O, no part of an O, no pleasant anything associated with pushing and crowning, just pain. Just wanted to chime in since so many responding have had it during natural childbirth, and I have not.

Me neither. I can only hope for something so pleasant when this one decides to make his or her exit/entrance (due a week from today...).
