first pregnancy, hoping for natural birth

Hi there!
I am currently almost 24 weeks pregnant, due 2/16/14, and am hoping for a natural childbirth.

I want to prepare as much as I can, but am not finding books to be that helpful. The Hypnobirthing book I got seems to only talk about taking the class, and what I am looking for is something that will talk more about pain coping strategies. I have downloaded some meditation "songs" from Amazon that are great, but from there, I am not quite sure where else to go or what to do.

I have not spoken to my midwife about it yet, for I do still have time to go, and I also plan on speaking with a doula on making a birth plan, but I am not sure if there is anything else I can be doing. I just want to make sure me and my husband are prepared.

If you have any suggestions as to what worked for you in preparing it would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance! :)

I took the Hypnobirthing class, read everything I could about childbirth, and read tons of positive birth stories. The class didn't do much for me. I found I already knew most of what they taught from my readings and most of the exercises seemed hokey. Find a method that resonates with you and put as much as you can into your tool belt. Do whatever you need to do to give yourself faith in your body and the birth process and surround yourself with supportive people. That's the best form of pain management there is.

Read the book "Natural Hospital Birth" It's super easy to read and goes over pretty much everything you need to know. Perfect for a first-timer.

I have to be completely honest - I took one birth class at the hospital and read a lot of stuff online. That was it. No books, no tapes, no videos, just resources listed here like websites and a lot of birth stories (of ALL kinds). I feel that I went in to labor with reasonable expectations of what it would be like (those being that anything could happen and it would be hard). As it turns out it was not bad at all. I made it through with the standard hospital taught breathing, birthing ball, and positioning.

My top advice, which I'm sure you will hear everywhere, is do not let them keep you in bed. If you plan on birthing at a hospital, insist they do the 20 minute strip while you are standing. They can do this, I made them do it during my labor because being in bed hurt too much and slowed my labor down. Good luck! You can do this! :)
