GBS test?
Just wondering who doesn't take this test at all? Or who takes the test "swabs themselves?"

Are there ways (naturally) to guarantee you wont pass this onto your baby regardless of whether you decide to take the test or not?

I have researched the use of antibiotics in birth and it seems it is harmful to both the mother and baby. (Thrush for mom, thrush in baby, thrush which makes breastfeeding difficult for both mom and baby, disrupting babys gut flora, allergies, asthma possibility later in life, weakened immunity).

Re: GBS test?
The birth center we're using has the moms swab themselves. They give you a packaged swab and a sealed tube and tell you how and where to swab. You do it in a single bathroom and give the tubed swab to the nurse when you're done. From what I've read, there are natural treatments to GBS. They are fairly similar to natural treatments for UTIs or yeast infections. Probiotics, garlic, etc... But those are treatments done long before labor begins.I personally will be taking the test again. There is no way to know if you need treatment (natural or otherwise) if you don't know you have it. You could ask your care provider if they're comfortable with you starting a base probiotic regimen just for preventative measures. And if you do happen to test positive, you can discuss with them what options you have for natural treatments. It can go away before birth, but you would also need a followup test to make sure it's gone.

Re: GBS test?
My birth center also allowed you to take your own swab. My midwife recommended a garlic treatment, which was... interesting? I got a negative result. I'm not sure if it was because of the garlic or I was negative anyway, but it didn't hurt. It did put me off garlic for a few days though. ;) I've heard good things about the probiotics too. I prefer not to use antibiotics for ANYTHING unless it's absolutely necessary so I was happy not to have to use them (my birth center's policy is that you can decline the test/decline the IV antibiotics, but if you do either of those things you'll need to deliver at the hospital with the midwife instead and you'll need to stay an extra 24? I think? hours to monitor the baby).

Honestly, the whole test is a bit bunk since a positive or negative several weeks before the birth is subject to change whether you change anything or not. The link that SCMomma shared has a lot of great information! :)

Re: GBS test?
I don't really care for them. You can be + one week and - the next. We do it for paperwork reasons, but treat everything naturally. I've never been + before.

Re: GBS test?
I have tested GBS+ for all three of my pregnancies. I know some women fluctuate but I seem to always be positive. My first two were hospital births so we did antibiotics. My last was at a free standing birth center so no meds of any kind. I was also at higher risk because my water always breaks first and then labor never starts. I did a lot of research and we talked about it at length with the midwife, who assured me she has been through many GBS+ births. She gave me a list of things I could do and supplements I could take during the last few weeks and after my water broke, we did a hibiclens rinse. I can't remember everything on the list (pregnancy brain...) - I know garlic was part of it.
