Bedrest

Yep, that would be me, indefinitely... Yuck.

It all started Friday with some light spotting, cramping and a boat load of pressure in my lower abdomen. A quick trip to emerg and I was out of there with antibiotics for a bladder infection. I also got a quick peek at the little one and a super fun internal exam where they confirmed my cervix was still closed and "looking good". Thanks Doc. They sent the urine to be cultured and told me to start the antibiotic anyway since the dip stick test lit up like a Christmas tree, and if nothing came back they would call me at home to let me know so that I could stop taking the antibiotic. I didn't hear from them, so I assumed it was the bladder infection and continued to take the pills. I would have gone to my regular doctor, but they aren't open Thursday or Friday.

All weekend I still felt yucky and not well, which is strange because normally after a couple of days on antibiotics you start to feel somewhat normal again.

I have the day off work today and was getting ready to take my stepson to the bus when I ran to the washroom quickly and noticed small blood clots. I called my doctors office as soon as I got home and they told me to come in right away. Another urine test (this one clean this time), another internal (cervix still closed and firm), and we were able to detect the babies heartbeat. She sent me home to rest while she tried to get hold of the specialist clinic. She also confirmed with the ER that my urine test culture had not come back with an infection (thanks for the call). Anyway, this afternoon she called and said she hadn't been able to get hold of my specialist, I think he might be on vacation in hindsight, I remember him talking about that last time, but she had talked to a colleague who specializes in pre-natal care and she recommended taking it easy. So yeah... Bed rest, but thankfully not strict rest. They're worried it may be the previa. I see my new OB tomorrow so I'll mention it there as well.

Trying not to worry about it, but holy carp... Being pregnant is nothing but a bunch of worries it seems. lol At least once this baby is born I can move my worrying somewhere else. I think I'll be one of those mothers standing over the crib with a mirror, making sure baby is breathing. Then I might invest in a bubble, to avoid scrapes and bruises. Oy...

Oh no! I"m sorry you're having a tough time. Makes it even more frustrating when you're in the middle of care and dont have the same person to talk to!

I hope you can get some more answers at your appointment tomorrow, in the mean time just try to relax and remember that you saw the little bean & the heartbeat

Keep us posted!

Oh my goodness. I hope the spotting/clotting go away. Sorry you have to be on bed rest (even if it's not super strict).

Sorry about your worries. Bed rest is kinda stinky.

Ugh, bedrest is awful for sure :( (((hugs)))!

What good news that your little one is doing well though and your cervix is firm/closed :cheer:!!

Hoping and praying the activity ban with be lifted at some point ;)

Re: Bedrest

Lucy, the ER doctor that did the ultrasound had less than fantastic bedside manner. She just looked long enough to check the heartbeat (actually in her words "Let's make sure there's a live baby in there") and didn't look at anything else. Even after I had mentioned that at my last ultrasound the placenta was resting on the cervix... My own doctor is much more helpful, but she doesn't have an ultrasound machine at her office. I was OK with just hearing the heartbeat there though. I'm hoping today may bring more answers. I'm off to my doctor's office first thing this morning and then later my first appointment with the OB and in the meantime I'm waiting for the specialist to call. In between all this, after I run to work and drop off my doctor note I guess I'll rest!

I work in a hospital, and actually wrote the system that tracks complaints. This comment warrants a complaint. What a horrible example of bedside manner. Please take a minute and make a phone call or write an email.

I think I will Michelle. It didn't sit right with me then, it doesn't now and everyone I've mentioned it to is appalled. I think the nurse that was in the room made a bit of a face as well. She's probably fresh out of medical school, she was pretty young. You would think they'd teach a little bit of compassion.

Re: Bedrest

I am going to see my midwife today for something similar. I have been having strong constant downward pressure and constant cramping (like period cramps) for 4-5 days and it has gotten stronger each day. I am not bleeding at all, but she wanted to see me anyway because I have a high risk of an incompetent cervix due to a procedure that I had done in 2010. Hopefully all will turn out well for both of us :)
