birthing class!

So...I got hubby and I registered for a birthing class at our hospital to start in mid-August. Except I get a call last night from one of the nurses saying that no one else has signed up for the August class, and they have only one other couple signed up for the class that starts next week - and would we be willing to start earlier so we have the company?

Half the reason we are doing the classes is so we can meet other families (we have no friends or family with kids that live nearby), so we opted to switch to the class that starts next week. Though I'm happy to be able to meet another couple, and that the nurse offered us additional services closer to our due date (since this class will end 7 weeks before my due date!)...I am all of a sudden feeling like OMG **** IS GETTING REAL.

Like..staring down the barrel of a gun reality check time. As a first time mom, this sudden awareness of how REAL everything is about to be is crazy overwhelming and emotional. I'm excited and happy, nervous, anxious, scared, etc. I assume this is all normal though, so there's that reassurance :)

For those of you who have taken a birthing class before, what should I expect? I know nothing about what it's really like, and assume that how tv/movies portray these classes is highly stylized and over-exaggerated or just plain old doesn't tell you the whole story. Just curious what everyone else's experiences were like!

It's great that she offered to switch you so you have other people with you :).

As a first time mom as well, I know what you mean about realizing how real this is ahah. I must say that hitting 25 week was the point where I started freaking out about how real this is ahah. That's the week I got several books about birth at the library .

Hope you enjoy the classes! I'm still waiting to know when mine will start but worse comes to worse we have access to the powerpoints online.

Wait and see how real it is when they tell you to take the baby home! :)

I have never taken a birthing class but when I worked in L&D, the lady that taught the class (a nursery nurse) would bring all the couples through the unit and give them a mini tour. She showed a video on birth, taught breathing techniques and told them about what to expect during delivery, like how many nurses and doctors would be in the room, what equipment would be there, what to expect if baby needed extra help, etc....She also gave dad's plenty of advice, too.

ha!! I know, I am totally going to be like "ummm are you SURE this is a good idea? Why are you letting me take this thing home?!"

Well, my class is 7 weeks long, so I am interested to see what all they pack in to 7 2-hour classes!!

I think there were 5 classes when I had my first, it was all basic stuff that you'd probably already know or could find on the internet but it was nice to be there with other parents all about to do the same thing and have a giggle about it!

I still can't quite believe I'm pregnant let alone going to take a tiny baby home, it just seems so unreal at the minute. But from my memory of my first, everything is such a whirlwind in the first few weeks that you just go with it and it's not until you look back that you think "Wow, did I really do that?!" :D

I haven't registered for any classes because none seem to work with our schedule. aaaaaaaaaaaaah and the midwives have told me that I should be doing this. Not sure what to do.

Plus my husband won't go to them that is for sure.

Steph I think the Ontario gov puts their prenatal classes' powerpoints online too... I'll chek for the link.

Oh it's the City of Ottawa that does the online classes... I guess it's probably a good substitute no matter what! Here's the link Prenatal classes/programs offered in Ottawa | City of Ottawa

Oh thank you! That's great to have! One of the centers here has an online course but you have pay a lot of money for it. :)

I took a class with my first. I want to say it was 6-8 weeks for a couple hours each time. There were videos, explanations of the birthing process, a tour of the maternity floor, breathing and relaxation techniques, etc. Some people love them, some don't. ;)

I wanna take a infant CPR class before the times come, I've taken one before but it's been years, but other than that I think I'm good. I think my boyfriend need to take a infant care class, not sure if I can get him to do that without me. Classes are good! Lol

Ours was kinda like what to expect during child birth class. I would not say it would substitute for a natural child birth class if that is the route you wish to take. Ours showed us the L&D, showed a video of a women screaming in pain before an epidural, giving birth, explained dilation and effacement etc. Explained common surgeries and routine PP care.
