I found out yesterday after 2 m/c's that I have MTHFR which is basically a genetic mutation in my gene that produces folic acid. My dr explained that it is a deficiency and that my body doesn't create enough folic acid. He feels that this could definitely be the reason why I m/c'd. I need to take extra folic acid on top of my prenatal to make up for what my body isn't making. I looked on the internet for info on this and honestly it has scared me more! Just wondering from personal experience if anyone has this condition at all.
I didn't have a diagnosable problem like that, but the perinatal specialist that I saw did give me extra folic acid to take everyday along with my prenatal.
I didn't notice any side effects at all and was told I could stop taking it after awhile.
What did you find out about this condition?
Basically it just means my body isn't giving itself enough folic acid because of this genetic mutation. My dr said that with the extra folic acid that it will definitely put me on the right track but online I was reading all these stories about repeated m/c and people that couldn't conceive and how they were worried about neural tube defects and taking heparin and all other things and I was worried I wasn't doing enough. I hope that I am though and that next time things will go good!
