Anxiety Medication (Zolof generic: Sertraline) and Pregnancy

Hi friends,

I don't know for sure that I'm pregnant... I'm at 7 DPO so I haven't tested yet. But I think I am based on symptoms (wishful thinking??)! :)

When I began to think I might be pregnant I stopped taking my anxiety medication because my mom (who is a RN and worked for a year or so in the Labor and Delivery Unit of the hospital) once said that there can be negative affects on the baby if I take the medication during pregnancy.

I trust my mom of course, but I'm looking for more information and don't want to ask her because she doesn't know that I may be pregnant. No need to alarm her before I have good reason to! :)

I've read a lot online and apparently it's a level C drug (FDA) which mean it has shown correlation with use during pregnancy and heart defects in the babies of lab animals.

All that said, it really helps me control my emotions and anxiety and am nervous about not being on it during an especially emotional time such as pregnancy... has anyone had experience with this kind of medication? What have your doctors said on the subject?

Sorry, I know it's long... just been on my mind and thought I'd ask! Thanks in advance. :)

I flipped out when I found out I was pregnant b/c I was on Sertraline & had been for a long time. My OB said Zoloft/Sertraline is one of the antidepressants OB's like to prescribe pregnant women (if needed, of course). So I continued with it, and delivered a healthy baby 9 months later. I actually had my dose increased later due to some serious post-partum depression - and I was nursing! It helped SO much.

No negative effects here. I've seen the lawsuit commercials about anti-depressants and side effects. Personally I think those commercials are bunk but when you're a panicky first-time mom with PPD, it is nerve-wracking.

My suggestion is to discuss your concerns with a Psychiatrist who holds an MD (can prescribe) as well as your OB. Do NOT go off your medication cold turkey w/o medical supervision!

Good luck. :fingerscrossed:

My uncles wife took Zoloft while pregnant with her twin girls. One was fine, the other had a series of issues that's specialists blamed on Zoloft. After 6 surgeries in the first year she sadly passed. My neighbor just had a little girl on the 19th and she was on it during her pregnancy, the baby is fine. So it's hard to say if it hurts or not.

Ive heard conflicting arguments regarding Zoloft... I would definitly talk to your OB and the dr tha prescribed you Zoloft.

Either way, please don't stop zoloft cold turkey!! It needs to be weaned down and off not stopped abruptly!
good luck and please keep us posted!

Ok, I didn't read the other answers, but, with my first pregnancy, I took sertraline the WHOLE pregnancy....and even after my son was born. I've never had any complications, doctor told me it is one of the drugs that's compatible with pregnancy.
I did take a low dosage (50mg/a day), and it worked like a charm :)
I'm pregnant again, and you bet I'm going to take it again! I am very depression-prone and I'm not going to put myself through that hell, if I know that there's a pill that will help me.
H&H 9mnths to you!
