Re: Clothing restrictions on kids

If it doesn't make them scream in horror at the feel of it against their skin and it fits into the dress code for school, they can wear it.

Re: Autism Connected To Genes?

Truth. A Norwegian study (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110228090611.htm) showed that there was a similar rate in adults compared to children in 2011.

Re: When should CPS be called?

Um, you could have said, "This kid seems withdrawn, overly upset, is rocking in a corner," etc. and never would you have to use the word "autism." I'm aware that a teacher can't diagnose a child. ...

Re: When should CPS be called?

Reading comprehension is key here, Kimberly. I said that's fine if it works for you and your kids, but if an outsider (even a preschool teacher or daycare provider) said that my kid had issues, I...

Re: When should CPS be called?

THIS. Or, you can be specific and say things like "he was stimming excessively and seemed very withdrawn", being specific to the behavior. Saying "this child has issues" is AWFUL.

And hey,...

Re: When should CPS be called?

See, I was a teacher, so I understand that, but when you are dealing with kids with special needs, I know that there can be reasons behind certain things that to an untrained person, may look like...

Re: When should CPS be called?

I'm not the person who originally posted the story. You may want to check user names before you make more assumptions that I changed my story, since I didn't.

You know, the thing that bothers me...

Re: When should CPS be called?

Way to make assumptions. First of all, the person was me, so you can stop assuming you know what the heck you're talking about now.

I actually hadn't gone into surgery yet - this was 3 days...

Re: Shoplifting Safeway Mom

For some reason, the article in the OP wouldn't load for me. This is a more detailed description of what happened:

Couple arrested and child taken for forgetting to pay for sandwi - Hawaii News...

Re: What is disabled?

Well, according to Ashley's definition above, "mental retardation" also qualifies, which bothers me for sure, because of the way in which many cognitive tests are administered (essentially with...

Re: "Racially Insensitive" Costumes

Honestly, I don't find the excuse "It's just Halloween" to be a good one. Most of us here are not from a marginalized population. Would you be okay with someone putting on blackface? Would you...

Re: What is disabled?

The above still have to pass the written and the driving test. I feel a little iffy about Alzheimers/ dementia, but um, you realize that autistic individuals have varying levels of abilities, right?...

Re: Piercing GUNS

To the bolded - that is not true 100% of the time. I was a piercing girl about 8 years ago. I attended a total of 9 hours of training, and then I practiced on molds shaped like a human head and then...

Re: Hormone Blocking Therapy for Pre-teen

That shows some pretty astounding ignorance on what it is to be transgender, since gender identity has little to do with sexual orientation.

There is a slight difference between the article in the...

Re: Public Schools & Dress Codes - for parents??

One of the links had this to say as well:

So technically, yes, a dress code can be enforced. There is a dress code on some military bases for shopping in the commissary/exchange, so if this...

Re: Decriminalizing Domestic Abuse

Yup, if it's not obvious who the "primary offender" is, you can absolutely go to jail. I've seen this happen to a number of my neighbors, both here in WA and when I lived in CT, too.
