Re: How to select and edit backgrounds?

Just use layer masks.

Duplicate layer, apply edits so background is as you want it (ignoring subjects) then add a layer mask and mask the subject back in.

Re: Hi, a quick question

This is really tough - it sucks that you have such poor images of your wedding day :(

Let's deal with the pictures first. The images that she took, whatever you may think of the quality, are...

Re: Simple bw conversion using gradient map and curves in PS

You need to check your histogram - if it's touching the sides, there's clipping. Usually it's immediately obvious where the clipping is because you'll be able to see on the picture where there are...

Re: sharpening photos?

I did a sharpening for print test, where I tried several methods on copies of the same image and compared the prints. I did all the methods suggested by Scott Kelby and actually didn't particularly...

Re: A question from a friend of mine...

Sounds to me as if the lens is on AF and is struggling to find focus in low light conditions. Ask her if she gets the focus lock beep and then it won't let her take the picture, or if it's not...

Re: Focal Issues

I think you may be confusing clarity for focus. On the photo you've posted, the focus is absolutely fine. When you look at your image, find the area of sharpest focus within that image. In this case,...

Re: What sort of edit do you absolutely not like?

Over-sharpened, alien eyes. If your focus is spot on, it's unnecessary so it always looks to me as if it's an attempt to cover up missed focus.

Oh, and selective colouring. Hate it with a passion.

Re: What have you learned?

That good catchlights can make the difference between a mediocre image and something very special :)

Re: Is your camera always ready to go?

Always ready to go as in always easily accessible and with a charged battery, but I do keep it in its bag, with all the lenses, so as not to get it dusty etc.

Re: Best way to get Christmas light shots with kids in them?

I'd do 2 exposures - one long exposure with a very narrow ap for the tree lights, then one regular exposure using your lights, for the kids.

Re: Question about close ups

They actually both look fine to me in terms of focus. There's nothing about your settings that would indicate any problem - ap allows for a good depth of field, ss should be high enough etc.

I...

Re: Some favorites from a newborn shoot that I had on Sunday. =)

I know Firefox has colour management now - I assume that means it can read embedded colour profiles? So I guess anyone viewing with Firefox + colour management sees the correct colour, whereas anyone...

Re: Some favorites from a newborn shoot that I had on Sunday. =)

I'm really confused now! You viewed the photos at school via the internet and the colour looked fine?

Afaik all browsers display all web images as sRGB which means that if the file was saved in a...

Re: Some favorites from a newborn shoot that I had on Sunday. =)

They're lovely!!

I think your colour issues are because the photos are saved in the prophoto colour space instead of sRGB :)

Re: Feeling really down in the dumps...

I agree with Heather - practice makes perfect and each time you have a shoot, you'll get that bit better. You already have the business savvy which, as you say, is at least half the battle. The rest...

Re: Photo editing?

Photoshop CS4 here. I was lucky to get it at Adobe employee price because it certainly isn't cheap - like Rachel said, Elements is a great alternative (or one of the earlier Photoshop versions) if...
