So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

I will definitely bring my own pillows, camera/camcorder, clothes for myself and babies, moisturizer, lip balm, mascara, toiletries, and magazines.

What will you bring?

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

As a FTM I'm anxious to read what you all have to say! I've been wanting to make a list. When do you get the bag together?

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

Usually I wait until I find out my induction date; however, this time around I'll probably get it together around week 34 as the chance for pre-maturity with twins is elevated.

My advice for FTM's is to definitely take your own pillows (plural)! You will be SO much more comfortable!

Great lists ladies...

Just wanted to add:
*Lanolin(breast cream) was a life saver for me at the hospital
*Phone and charger
*Check book or credit card (for baby pictures and/or hospital tv)
*Along with the nursing bras; a nursing tank top or shirt (made it easier with frequent visitors)
*pacifier for baby if you choose(some hospitals will not provide them)

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

This is the list I had last time:
For Me:
  • 1-2 nursing-friendly nightgowns
  • some dark coloured granny panties (6 pairs?)
  • travel toothbrush/toothpaste
  • travel size shampoo/conditioner/body wash
  • slippers
  • socks (really want some fuzzy ones with grips on the bottom....)
  • house coat (maybe, I may just use the hospital's)
  • post-partum pads
  • loose jogging pants/top for going home
  • camera
  • chapstick
  • hair elastics
  • nursing bra
  • Shower cap (for shower-time during labour)
  • Energy bars or dried fruit.
For Baby:
  • coming home outfit
  • a few extra onesies/footsies
  • 2 swaddling blankets
  • mittens, socks
  • Thick blanket for carseat
Probably will use a similar list this time. I think the only thing I would change was that the first time, the pants that I packed kept me WAY too warm. I didn't realize the hot-flashes I'd have after birth. So I will pack much lighter stuff this time.

I've been getting antsy to pack my bag already. I just want to be ready ASAP. lol

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

This is awesome! I love all the great ideas. For the post partum pads, do you order those from amazon or something? Or can you get them at walmart and are they different from a big maxi pad?

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

What a great thread! I'm glad to mooch off you ladies' lists as well ;) I started thinking about this over the weekend, and I really need to start getting serious about it because otherwise I will wait until I'm having my contractions! LOL

I just bought heavy flow menstrual pads, like the heaviest I could find. The hospital also provided them.

After my flow lightened, I just switched over to my cloth pads-- much more comfy!

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

i just got heavy flow maxi pads, too. i bought two packages and i never opened the second one because i had such a huge stash from the hospital. they gave me a few pairs of those mesh panties too.

i'm going to suggest packing dry shampoo or a headband or hair elastic or *something* (i had ZERO time to actually wash my hair when i was in the hospital!), nursing pads, good chapstick, and maybe a few extra, empty bags to make carrying flowers and stuff home easier.

definitely don't forget a cell charger!

also, make sure you install your car seat **well** ahead of time. you really don't want to have to send someone outside to figure that out in the middle of the hospital parking lot.

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

I don't bring a whole lot- I try and get out of there as soon as I can! I will bring
- clothes (I like to get out of that gown as soon as the epidural wears off!) Usually yoga pants, nursing tank, and a t shirt
- toiletries (just shower stuff and toothpaste/toothbrush)
- Ipad and I phone and their chargers
- flip flops
- My own pads (I LOVE the hospital ice pack ones but after 24 hours I am good to go with just the regular ones I use when on my period)
- Regular underwear (but my least favorite pairs!) I switch to those once I switch to regular pads
-camera
-Maybe my own pillow?
-For baby, a boy and girl outfit to go home in and a monogrammed baby hat with each of our chosen names. I usually leave the baby in the hospital outfit until it's time to go home- my first two spit up a lot of amniotic fluid those first couple days and I had tho change their shirts a few times.
-Blanket to go home with and the carseat!

That's it! The hospital will have the rest :)

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

Will need to revisit this in another month or two. Love these lists! I just know I went mostly off the internet ones with DD and had way too much stuff.

DH appreciated that I'd brought snacks and drinks.

The one thing I didn't have last time that I will definitely take is the boppy. You'll have plenty of pillows to help with nursing positions, but nothing is quite like an actual nursing pillow.

I agree; the internet lists usually have way too much stuff, ime. The hospital provides blankets, baby clothes, diapers, wipes, pads, etc. I've brought clothes and blankets for baby before (other than going home outfit) and end up bringing home dirty laundry; just another thing to do when I get out of the hospital, lol.

I also try to bring as few things as possible; the hospital gives you SO much stuff to take home...blankets, hats, diapers, baby wash, baby lotion, wipes, etc., etc. I end up with 3-4 bags just from what the hospital gives us to take home.

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

I definitely don't like taking a bunch of stuff. We don't live far from the hospital and my husband will be making trips back and forth plenty I'm sure, so I'll just make sure to have the basics. I do get a lot of things for baby from the hospital, and quite a few of the things I'll need as well. I won't stay there any longer than necessary as long as there are no surprises.

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

Can we sticky this thread? There are lots of great ideas on here :) I didn't use 3/4 of what I packed with my first babies lol The hospitals I delivered at provided most of what I needed (pads, "underwear")... so I plan to take only what I really will need. Mostly stuff to get ready.. and I might sneak snacks.. I remember after Morgan they fed me a turkey sandwich and it was the middle of the night... with Marie I delivered and they didn't feed me for forever... I think someone forgot. lol

Ugh, I've had that happen before! I am ravenous after giving birth; I'll have to remember to have some food waiting for me so I don't have to wait an hour (or longer) for left over cafeteria food :/

Re: So, what's everyone bringing to the hospital?

basically, i ate a light dinner on a sunday-- one blueberry bagel, because i was sick as a dog. i went into labor later that night, and gave birth at nearly 8pm on a tuesday, without eating or drinking anything in the interim. all they'd allow me at the hospital was ice chips.

harvey's nurse took him to nicu right after he was born. meanwhile, i was stuck in bed with an iv pumping me full of antibiotics (**i** was the sick one, not harvey!), and no one was sure if i would be allowed to see him at all. so, we had nothing better to do-- MY nurse immediately handed me a menu.

i ordered chicken parm, and i basically inhaled it. i probably would have stabbed someone with my fork had they tried to touch my tray. it was probably awful, but at the time, i was convinced it was the best food i'd ever eaten.

These were the ones I ended up using. I got weirdly attached to the mesh underwear and pads that the hospital gave, mostly because I didn't have to worry about ruining underwear. I even took a ton home with me. When I finally realized I was acting like a crazy lady being obsessed with mesh underwear I switched to these. They are basically like putting a diaper on underwear but you don't have to feel like you're wearing a diaper.
