Thoughts on a Canceled IUI Cycle

Hi Ladies,

We are TTC#2 and did our first Follistim cycle this month. On CD18, they canceled the cycle because I had two 19mm follies, two 15 mm and five around 12-13 mm. (I'm a bit miffed because I called the nurse twice in the days before the cancellation to double check that they didn't want to pull back on my dosage but they poo-pooed my concerns.)

When the nurse called to tell me to cancel, she told me to do the trigger that night and abstain from sex for the rest of the cycle. I mentioned that DH and I had had sex the night before, was she sure we should trigger?? She went back and checked with the doc who said do not trigger, just ride out the cycle.

So we are riding out the cycle but it all feels a bit weird. If there was a risk of cancellation, why didn't they tell us not to have sex? DH's swimmers are good so are we now risking quads?

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else on here has had cancelled IUI's and what their experience has been. I've been impressed overall with the RE practice I've been seeing but honestly, it feels like they botched this one.

Never had a IUI cancelled :( I'm sorry to hear that. But I'm assuming they said not to have sex because you risk having multiples? I don't know... If you want to take that risk, go for it. Who knows what can happen... Maybe you'll just end up having 1 or 2...

Thanks, Marieke. Apparently, that's what happened to Jon + Kate. They had a canceled IUI and were told not to have sex but did anyway. We don't want to risk that, or anything close to that. We don't want to have to consider a reduction, and we don't want to risk all the health problems that come with multiples - cerebral palsy, etc. I'm not sure if we're already risking that having had sex the night before. I guess we'll know in a few weeks.

I have only had one canceled and that was because I had 7 follicles all 16mm+
My Dr wouldn't have canceled that (nor my last RE). Basically 3-4 is fine with my Dr and my Dr wouldn't even look at those 12-13s. So you would be looking at *maybe* 4 if you triggered soon.
How many IUIs have you had? Maybe that makes a difference.

No experience with IUI just wanted to say I'm sorry for the cancellation and fact that you are now in limbo after dtd.....maybe you will get pg :). And hopefully it's with only as many as you are comfy with

I had a cancelled IUI but it was for the opposite of yours, not big enough follies. I also didn't take my trigger shot and it took me a long time to start my period that cycle. Hopefully that doesn't happen to you because I was itching to start my next cycle. I'm sorry you feel your place dropped the ball on this for you. I hope next cycle works out for you!

I never had a cancelled cycle due to too many follies. However, I have triggered with 4ish mature eggs all 3 times. Didnt get pregnant yet. So, I dont think its too many...i would trigger and have sex anyway, but we have severe MFI, so that lowers the chances for multiples for us.

I wouldn't waste the cycle. I would be bding anyways! You had two follies and they cancelled? That seems odd to me.

I've no experience with IUI, but sorry your cycle was cancelled, but if it was me, I'd probably bed. Good luck to you

Re: Thoughts on a Canceled IUI Cycle

Thanks for all these great responses, ladies. If CM is any indicator, I think the moment for any unapproved BDing has passed... Part of me wishes we had just gone for it, but then the other tells me that we agreed early on that we'd rather have a BFN than multiples, and we still believe that.

Lucy, this is my second Follistim+IUI cycle. The first one resulted in our DD. I think the RE may be taking that history into account. On that cycle, we had a 16mm and a 14mm when we triggered and nothing else. So I think when the RE sees two 19 and two 15, knowing we had a pregnancy last time with a 16, I think they worry about quads. I get it. And I agree that we don't want quads. We just don't want to have to deal with all the terrible decisions involved there. So everything makes sense and I understand why the decision was made and why DH and I are abiding by it, it's just not the outcome we wanted, of course.

In the grand scheme of things, though, it's not that much of a setback. It's always better to have too many than too few, so we should be thankful for that. This isn't really that big a deal. Hopefully we'll just be able to make a fresh start next month. And next month, I will call the nurse incessantly if I feel my dose is wrong rather than being the polite patient and going with the flow.

Thanks for letting me vent here a bit, ladies. Hoping everyone gets their BFP pronto! (but not with quads!)

You sound like a good patient with a good Dr!!
Every situation is so different and that just shows it!
I would love 4 follicles LOL!

I hope the next cycle does the trick!

Cysts?

It's been three weeks since our iui was cancelled due to overstimulation. BFN and no AF so I'm thinking cysts maybe? I can't figure out why I wouldn't have AF by now. Anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

Did they check your E2?

Have you tested? :)

Did you trigger?

JessicaW June 15th, 2013 07:58 AM

Re: Thoughts on a Canceled IUI Cycle

We did not trigger, per RE instructions (because we BDed the night before they cancelled). I tested yesterday by POAS and got BFN. I need to call them and go in for a scan and bloodwork. But reading online I'm thinking the most likely thing happening is an estrogen-producing cyst or cysts that's impeding my AF? Not sure. But if so, I think I'm benched for at least a month. We are headed overseas in August for DHs brother's wedding so I may be out until September :frown:

Re: Thoughts on a Canceled IUI Cycle

Thanks for the encouragement!

We got some good news last week from the RE. Turns out I do not have a cyst! He doesn't know why I didn't have a period. He said I likely just absorbed the lining rather than shedding it. I didn't know that was possible. So all my levels are back at baseline.

We are starting another IUI cycle this month with Follistim. This morning CD 9 we spotted a 12mm on the left ovary - woohoo! All quiet on the right. This is good news, it seems, because there is a lead follie rather than all of them growing at once like last time. We'll see what happens.

So nothing too earth-shattering here in this update but figured I would add the next chapter in case there are any lurkers out there in a similar situation.
