At how many weeks did you start talking to your provider about your VBAC?

I am 9 weeks, but itching to talk about my VBAC but waiting until the 2nd trimester. What did you do? (I know he is VBAC supportive as I spoke to him while ttc) I look forward to talking to him about specifics .

I was asked if I would be trying for a VBAC at my intake appointment so I don't think it's ever too early to bring it up.

It came up with my ob at my first appt at 8 weeks. Mine didn't really go well, it was not really a discussion but more of the dr just telling me they would not allow me to. I ended up switching to a midwife who was very supportive. I'm really glad i brought it up early because I was able to think about what I really wanted to do, research other providers and make the switch before I was too far along.

I mentioned it to my OB on my post op appointment after my daughter was born. Seriously discussed it on prenatal visits throughout my son's pregnancy. My OB was kind of wishy washy on it, but google didnt turn up any more supportive providers in the area. In the end he ended up being ok with it. I will be finding a different provider for my next pregnancy, though. Preferably a midwife.

The first visit.

First visit for me, too. I see midwives, though, so I think it was a given that they'd be supportive.

My first appointment with this pregnancy was with the midwife who was on duty the day of my c-section, so it was a great conversation about what happened that day, my feelings about it, and what I was hoping for this time through. Then we talked about the circumstances under which a VBAC would be safe, and what would lead to a repeat c-section.

I think if I felt like I was going to have to talk an OB into trying it... I would consider whether switching OBs was an option.

I mentioned it at my PP appointment with my then OB, she said "NO"

so I promptly switched to a midwife and discussed it at my first pregnancy appt with them.

Then with my 3rd, I had moved, so I brought it up again at my first pregnancy appt. I wanted them to know upfront what I wanted, and I was going to get it. Come hell or high water.

Along these lines -

My midwife asked me to see the surgeon who did my c-section (OB works in the same practice) to get approval for the VBAC. Midwife, practice as a whole, and hospital are all reportedly pro-VBAC, which is reassuring.

Do you have any suggestions for questions I should ask when I meet with the surgeon for the consultation on this?

All I needed to do was show my surgical records to my midwife, so she could see that the incision was lateral and not vertical.

I'm unsure why you would need to see your surgeon at all. I would ask if a copy of the records woudl suffice and then get the records.

I had to meet the surgeon (new city) that would do my csec if it came down to it, he looked over my records, discussed how an ideal vbac would go, and what I'd be able to handle, if I was a good candidate based on reason for my csec/physical condition/etc, and also discussed the risks. Then shared my records with the other staff so they knew what to expect if things went wrong with the vbac. My second vbac was much easier, I didn't have to get approval to be allowed to have it.

I spoke with mine at my annual appt, before we knew I was actually pregnant, because i was told previously they dont' do VBACs at the hospital but since I've had my daughter they changed it, so he told me I'm a good candidate for a VBAC if that's what I wanted! So he's known from day one that I wanted a VBAC, I don't think it's ever too early to discuss your birth plan.

This is helpful, thanks. Midwives have the records, they are part of the same practice as the OB/surgeon who did the c-section.

I checked with the midwife again about the reason for this consultation, and she said it's partly to get a green light for VBAC, but more to have a conversation with the OB in case I need to schedule a c-section again. That way I can do it with the same surgeon (who I liked very much), and we'll at least have met before I'm naked in the OR. Seems reasonable.

I honestly would be very leary of your midwifes. to me, it doesn't sound like they want to do VBAC. She shouldn't be even bringing up scheduling a c/s.

With neither of my VBAC's was it even mentioned. I did change practices so I wouldn't have had the same ob/surgeon anyway, but none of my midwives even eluded to a c/s.

Toward the end of my second pregnancy my BP was getting kinda high and I did go to the hospital for observation. When we got there my BP was fine and I was sent home. My m/w did say to me, that if my bp hadn't come back down they were going to do a c/s. but that was the only time it ever came up. and I went into labor less than 12 hours later.
