Madonna Adoption Denied

Never one to back down from controversy, Madonna is back in the southern African nation of Malawi with her adopted son David, daughter Lourdes and son Rocco, attempting to adopt a little girl, according to the Associated Press.

Friday, a judge rejected the superstar’s bid to adopt a 3-year-old girl named Chifundo “Mercy” James, whose mother died shortly after giving birth to her. The reason for the judgment was a logistical one – with the court saying any prospective parents must reside in Malawi for a certain amount of time.

Madonna’s lawyers immediately filed a notice of appeal, according to the AP.

Madonna adopted David from Malawi in 2006, and brought him back to see his father on this recent trip.  The singer took David to visit the orphanage in the village of Mchinji, where he once lived.

As with her adoption process before, Madonna is facing scrutiny and accusations that her status and wealth help “speed the process” up. As with David, she insists that she is following all proper procedures.
