What is Gossip?

I found this resource online that I'd like to share with y'all.

What does the Bible say about gossip?

GOSSIP. What does the Bible say about gossip?

We often think of gossip as slanderous, and to be solely dependent on the intent, but I am quickly learning that this isn't always the case. Gossip reaps a lot of bad stuff because it is sinful:

A. Antithesis of righteousness - Lev. 19:16; Prov. 11:9; Rom. 1:29
B. Antithesis of faithfulness - Prov. 11:13
C. Product of corrupt mind - Rom. 1:28
D. Used by wicked people - Jere. 6:28
E. Stirs up trouble - Jere. 9:4
F. Breaks relationships - Prov. 11:9; 16:28
G. Causes anger - Prov. 25:23
H. Epidemic among those who do not know God - Rom. 1:28-32; II Cor. 12:20; II Tim. 3:3
I. Gossip is sin - diabolic - contrary to character of God
1. ego-enhancing - tear others down to build self up
2. comparison

The above source says that in the Christian community, gossip can be subtly guised as prayer requests. We don't even know that it has happened, it isn't our intention- but if we are bearing tales that one might embarrass another, or even revealing personal information about others- we have gossiped. Gossip is contrary to the character of God, and as Christians, we are to strive to be "little Christs" which is what the term Christian means.

Please keep this in mind when making your prayer requests. Please guard the honor of your family and your friends. God knows why you're asking us to pray. We needn't know the details for Him to do His work. Don't type something you wouldn't be willing to say directly to the person who is to be prayed for. For people like me who struggle with keeping my big mouth shut and disguise it as "honesty", don't say anything that you wouldn't be willing to say directly to the person that isn't for the edification of God. In light of all these things, let us take every care when using such a sacred gift as prayer to not let the enemy in and degrade its sanctity.
