Guns in the house
It just dawned on me that I need to make a decision about keeping my firearm. It made sense during the years I lived alone, but now that I'm married (and especially now that we're looking at having children around the house), I'm not so sure I want to keep it. I suppose I could buy a safe.. What are your thoughts? I realize most of the country isn't really all that big on firearms like the deep south.. I'm a liberal and a vegetarian, yet I still have the Southern mentality when it comes to guns. Haha.

Re: Guns in the house
We have guns and we got them AFTER having children in the house. they always made me nervous but after learning how to use one, i feel safer having one. Right now we have one of those big locks that goes on it, and keep it out of their reach, but i think we will look at getting a safe soon.

Re: Guns in the house
Since you are obviously comfortable and educated about your firearms I see no reason why they can't stay. I would just get a safe

Re: Guns in the house
SO and I have actually discussed getting at least a pistol eventually. Which would be locked up at all times..

Re: Guns in the house
Id just get a gun safe and when your child is older make sure they are told guns arent toys.

Re: Guns in the house
We have a few rifles and a handgun. The kids that are old enough go out shooting or bird or rabbit hunting with their dad on occasion. The little kids never touch them, and certainly nobody touches the guns without permission and supervision.

Re: Guns in the house
My father grew up in rural Pittsburgh, PA where they get off for all the starts of hunting season and we always grew up around guns. Rifles to be exact never handguns. We learned at an early age the proper way to handle and care for a gun including cleaning and storing. My father has never kept the guns and the bullets in the same place and they are under separate locks. We never knew where the keys were to these locks. We never tried to "play" with the guns because of the way we were taught to respect them. Hell he started taking us shooting when we were 7 and 8. It was a big part of his life, he was a nationally ranked sharpshooter during high school and college (thats how redneck his school was...a gun team LOL)

DH and I currently do not own any guns, because we really are not into hunting and I do not forsee the need for a firearm in my neighborhood to protect against an intruder. But I think it is completely fine to have one.

Re: Guns in the house
I'm from PA where we get off school and sometimes work for the first day of hunting season too! Haha. I don't currently own any firearms, but I might someday if I live alone. It would be locked up, of course. I don't see why you can't keep the gun as long as you're cautious about it.

Hi! saw your post I'm from January DDC Congrats on your pregnancy!

About your concern with your gun DEFINATELY get a safe, my husband and I own quite a few firearms (somewhere in the double digits I won't say exact number lol;) ) but just always always ALWAYS keep them in the safe. I carry mine on me and it makes me feel much more comfortable when my husband isnt with me. Just make sure if you carry yours like I do you never set it down for any amount of time, if its not on me its locked up. Its up to you whether you want to keep yours but I think you should!

Re: Guns in the house
We have a couple of guns and they are all kept in a gun safe in our closet.

Re: Guns in the house
You have a lot of great advice here... as a vegan (taking a break, but will go back) and raging liberal... I TOTALLY get your concern- but like any hazard in your home, the right education and prevention is what is key! My older kids father is a police officer, they have guns in their home, locked in a safe with a safety lock on them.

Re: Guns in the house
We have several guns in the house too. They are always unloaded, with a lock on them, and we keep the ammo in a separate location. We have talked about getting a gun safe as well.

We have guns in the house. They are locked up at all times. I'm not at all worried about it. My DH is very good about gun safety, and will be good about teaching the children to respect guns, too.

Re: Guns in the house
May DDC here - Growing up, my grandfather and my family had guns in the house. My grandfather was a serious hunter and just kept his rifles and shotguns under the bed, but we knew to never touch them. When we got older, my grandmother made him put them in a safe. My grandfather and one of my Uncle's also often slept with a loaded gun in case of intruders. I think my Dad's might have been loaded, I'm not 100% sure, but it wasn't locked up and I knew where the ammo was if I wanted to get into it. Dad was kinda paranoid about security and intruders too. When he offered to let me shoot one of his pistols when I was in my teens I was deathly afraid of it and wouldn't even touch it. With 3 girls, he probably didn't have to worry too much that we were going to try to play with the gun or bring it to school or something like that. We just had enough respect to know it was Dad's and to never touch it. Times were different then I guess (I'm almost 40 now lol)...

We have guns in our house now. I gave my .22 to my dad to put in his safe when I got pregnant the first time around because I didn't think I'd need it anymore and we didn't have a safe. Now we have DHs pistols, rifles and shotguns hidden up high in the closet, unloaded and locked, but we will be getting a safe for them soon. We also store the ammo separately.

It's a personal choice, but I don't think most people would criticize you for having a gun in the house as long as it's not easy accessible or loaded. Lock them up before the kids are old enough to be curious about them.

Re: Guns in the house
Yep, you need a safe. If all you have is a pistol, you can get something like this:

Gunvault Multivault Standard Gun Safe : Target

Something like this will allow you to keep it somewhere accessible so you can grab it quickly if necessary.

Re: Guns in the house
My husband is an avid hunter so we have a few shot guns a handgun and a bebe gun for pesky squirrels. Guns are put away out of reach of DD. My DH is very big into gun safety and talks about it now with DD even though she is just 3 almost 4. We plan to get a gun safe when we move.

Re: Guns in the house
Dh and I didn't have guns actually in the house until after our kids were born. The kids don't know where they are, but they have been taught gun safety. Our oldest is even getting to where DH wants to start taking him hunting with him.

I believe it is all about safety education. My dad always had guns in the house and I knew from a very young age about NOT TOUCHING and respecting them as dangerous.

Re: Guns in the house
Popping in from July DDC. :)

We have guns, too. Hubby is ex-military and we're both, ah, "home defense security conscious." We have a large gun safe for most of the rifles and handguns, plus a smaller, handier safe for a handgun within easy reach. Our kiddos are very little: 2 & 4. During the rare times I carry I always explain to my 4-year-old that the gun is a weapon, it's dangerous, and she should never ever touch it. Once they get older we'll teach them more about gun safety, and when they're old enough to try out a rifle, we'll get them lessons and show them how to use it.

You seem to be responsible about your gun ownership, so I say keep it.
