a friend shared this today on Facebook. I'm aware this is already very popular across the US, but residential speed limits are a bit higher in NS with no current reduction in School zones.

This is his repsonse.

This is awful, we are doing nothing more than teaching an already over coddled children that their safety is someone else's responsibility. When I was a kid which was not that long ago, we were taught to stop, listen, and look both ways before crossing the street. Some of you might even remember a time when children held an arm out straight in front of them indicating they wanted to cross the street. Others might need to be reminded that "jay walking" is a crime in this Provence. Meaning the cute little things should not be playing running or dancing in the streets to begin with. In closing if your hit at 50 you learn your lesson if your hit at 30 it could take you multiple incidents to learn that same lesson.
I'm just wondering where most of you would stand if this was happening in your area and it had never been before? To convert for you. 50km = 31mph so 30kmph = 18.6mph.

I feel he's taking all responsibility away from drivers who do not follow the law (aka stopping at a crosswalk) and placing it solely on the pedestrian. While I do think that yes, children need to be taught the rules of the road, I think that something needs to be done for the drivers who just aren't paying attention what so ever or who adapt the attitude that they have the right of way when they do not. Big city cross walks in Halifax have flashing amber lights to stop traffic in both directions... but I've been 3/4 of the way across more than once and someone decides to go in the 4th lane of traffic and nearly ram into me. Apparently pushing the button, waiting for all oncoming traffic at the time to stop and going wasn't good enough, I should know that the other guy was going to leap out from behind the semi and blow through the cross walk making it my fault huh? More than one town meeting has been called about making those lights red instead of amber.
