Social capital is the investments people make in the community when they
participate in civic organizations, vote, attend church, join
professional organizations, volunteer in service groups, and give to
worthy community causes.

In the past 20 years we have started to "cocoon." (This is where we draw
into our homes.) We are now a self-centered unit, occupying a fortress
that protects us from the difficulties of this world. We socialize only
with other Christians, preventing contact with and excluding those not
like us.

What will become of our society if Christians cease to exert their
influence in the marketplace, in the neighborhoods, in the schools, in
government, and in the community?
