Suggestions on how to keep blankets from "stretching"
Every crochet project I work on, no matter how diligent I am with my tension, always seems to turn out almost an X shape rather than staying with straight even edges.

I start and end with the same amount of stitches (I'm not afraid to tear out if I'm incorrect), I never change hook size.

This happens with all my projects.. and I just don't know how to fix it. I don't remember my grandmother ever having this problem... and she can't figure out where I'm going wrong either!

If needed by tomorrow I should have a picture of the blanket I'm putting a border on right now.

I have no idea sorry BUT my stepmother crochets, I'll ask her and see if she knows :)

The best thing I've heard of is blocking. If it's a natural fiber (plant or animal) you soak it then lay it out to dry, pinned in the shape/size you want it to be (has to be done each time you wash it). If it's acrylic you steam block it (without touching the iron to the yarn) and it will hold its shape for ever (you pin it out to the size/shape you want then steam it). Also, just putting the acrylic, damp, in the dryer with a towel helps to relax and shape the yarn.

Acrylic blocking explained.

Thanks Kristen.

I'm going to start flddling around with some things to see if I can correct it itself. I know my grandmother never blocks anything.. and I't not even sure how you'd block a huge one piece blanket.

here's the blanket.. you can see that the corners are stretched out a bit... my only thought is maybe I need to start using a smaller needle than I do for the foundation row.. it seems to make the blanket pucker out at the ends.

Wool. Use wool. It doesn't stretch like acrylics and polyester fibres!

It is very time-consuming to block a blanket, but you just steam block it to the measurement you want. You need to have a lot of open floor-space or an extra bed, but it can be done.

new to this board :)
i absolutely love blocking...it makes your pieces look handmade, not homemade if that makes sense without being too pretentious :) it just gives things a finished look.
be careful if you steam block acrylic or synthetic fibers...keep the steam at a distance and dont let it touch the fabric or you'll burn it...you want to set the stitches, not melt them..also, sometimes melting isn't all bad since it creates a silky look, but not really appropriate for a blanket like this..
i guess your post is older and this advice is probably not needed, but i'm curious to what you ended up doing and how it turned out :)
