Possible Crohn's Disease
Not sure if this is the right message board, but I've been having some issues and am being referred to a GI. My appt tomorrow is with the nurse, but supposedly she can help me out. Unfortunitely the only sure way to diagnose Crohn's is with a colonoscopy which they wont do because I'm pregnant. From what I read they "think" Crohn's is an autoimmune disease but no one seems clear. It is however an irritable bowel disorder if that helps at all... They also believe it could be genetic, but again, not sure... My mother has it and my 10 year old nephew was also diagnosed this year after being hospitalized for 2 weeks for rectal bleeding.

I'm not sure what to do, I'm just scared and worried and wondering if there is anyone else out there who might be going through this....

Re: Possible Crohn's Disease
I just wanted to express my thoughts to you. I am so sorry for what you are going through. If you can imagine, both of my older brothers, ages 27 and 28 have lived with chohns since childhood. One of them battles it a lot worse than the other. One lives a much healthier lifestyle than the other. It is considered an autoimmune disease. I too battle an auto immune disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was 18 months old. It is hereditary, but found in more men than women. It is found in jewish male descendants. I have seen my brothers, and been there through their surgeries and it was rough. Chad, 28, has half of his colon left and Ryan, 27, has, 1/3 of his colon left. I feel for you and hope that if it is true, and if you do in fact have crohns, I wish you all the best, and remember a positive attitude and healthy lifestyle will go a long way.

Re: Possible Crohn's Disease
Sorry I'm so late getting to this....
I'm sorry you are going through this. But I'll be happy to help answer questions and give you support. I have Crohn's Disease, diagnosed in June 2002. I just had my first child in September. My CD is well under control with medications and I had no problems during pregnancy.

To address your post: I have never heard anything to the contrary that Crohn's is an autoimmune disease. Also it's an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which is different than Irritable Bowel Syndrome. There is actual inflammation in your gut, which is what needs to be treated.

A GREAT resource for people with IBD is a message board called IBD Sucks.
IBD Sucks!™ - Please Log In
I have learned so much there. They are just as supportive as people here!

Good luck moving forward with this. I'll check back into this thread to see if you have any questions.

Re: Possible Crohn's Disease
Hello! I actually just stumbled upon this part of the jm board.
Sorry to hear that you're having problems. It's difficult to not stress, but stressing will actually make your symptoms worse.
Crohn's is an autoimmune system and it is hereditary. It is a terrible disease; however, there are different levels of severity. You may be going through a flare, things get better.
It is controlled with medications. It stinks, but once you and your gastro have developed a plan of action for maintaining your disease in check you should feel better.
The semi-good news is that even though you may have Crohn's it may just be because that you're flaring, which is also temporary. One thing that you could try is cutting all processed foods from your diet. Even though diet doesn't control Crohn's, there are often times foods that will aggrevate your symptoms when you're flaring.
Your best bet is to read up on the disease. The key is trying to understand how the disease affects your body and realizing when you're going into a flare.
Healingwell.com has a lot of information. You can look there for some information or see what other people's symptoms are. They have a forum part on there. You can read up. Most people there are not pregnant but many have had children so they have experience in that regard.
I hope I haven't thrown too much information at you or freaked you out. Feel better!

Re: Possible Crohn's Disease
I have a friend with Crohn's. Her's is well managed with diet and IV medication. Good luck to you in figuring out what is wrong. I know how frustrating it can be to have symptoms but no one can tell you what is wrong.
