Gender: Feminine
Usage: English, Italian, Romanian
Pronounced: və-RAHN-i-kə (English)
Latin form of BERENICE, the spelling influenced by the ecclesiastical Latin phrase vera icon meaning "true image". This was the name of a legendary saint who wiped Jesus's face with a towel and then found his image imprinted upon it. Due to popular stories about her, the name was occasionally used in the Christian world in the Middle Ages. It was borne by the 17th-century Italian saint and mystic Veronica Giuliani. As an English name, it was not common until the 19th century, when it was imported from France and Scotland.

It's alright but sounds too fancy to me. And reminds me of Archie comics.

Dated and snobby to me.

Cordelia November 3rd, 2008 09:04 PM

I don't care for it. I have no legitimate reason why; I just don't like it.

I don't know what's snobby about it.

Obviously, I love it, it's my daughter's name, except spelled Veronika. We spelled it with a K because DH is Polish and I am Russian and it's spelled with a K in those countries. But the meaning of the name (posted above "true image") was very meaningful to us, especially to DH when he suggested the name to me.

I like it a lot. I like V names and -ika / ica names for the most part, so Veronica is a perfect fit for my naming taste.
