"Is there really milk in there?"
I was out of town visiting DH's family for the weekend. Once, when I was breast feeding Anna, one of the little girls (about 4.5 years old) who was at the gathering came up to talk to me. She said, "Is she sucking on you?" She had never seen a baby breast feeding before. I told her that she was, and she asked why. I told her that's how she ate. After thinking about it for a minute, she asked, "Is there really milk in there?" We went on to have a somewhat involved conversation about it...she wanted to know why there was milk there, and if I could feel it, and why some babies drink from a bottle. She said her mom had a baby, and that the baby never did that with her mom--she just got milk from a bottle.

Anyway, it made me think about how I grew up thinking it was normal, because I saw my mom breast feed my little sister. But plenty of people grow up never seeing it at all. I had never really thought about it that way, I guess.

I never saw a baby breastfeed until adulthood.

That's so sweet! I hope that she remembers your interaction when she has her first baby! Thanks for doing your part in normalizing breastfeeding!
