Bed Recommendations
So, Cam will be about 20-21 months when Squishy 2.0 makes his/her appearance. We really don't want to buy a second crib. We kept Cam in our room until he was 6.5 months, and we plan to do the same again...so Cam will be over 2 years old when we actually need the crib.

Where can I look for kids beds or toddler beds? Reasonably priced. I want to get bunk beds, but it might not be in our budget (double on the bottom, single or twin up top).

We also have solid wood bunk beds that are single on the bottom and top, and belonged to my dad and his brother when they were younger. They are currently in storage in our basement. Cam's big boy room is not much smaller than our master bedroom so these beds look pretty ridiculous in there. And we don't have a dresser etc. to match them. And we can't do anything to the beds (eg staining etc.) to match something new as they are nostalgic to my dad and he would flip. Should we use those and make his room all mismatched? It would save for us on the money front.

Or should we bite the bullet and buy him a toddler bed? Anyone use them and see value rather than skipping to a regular bed with rails? I am thinking putting a mattress on the ground for a while first to get him used to it before actually putting the bed in there if we don't go with a toddler bed.

Also, when would I transition him? I don't want to transition him right when I need it so he doesn't get jealous, but I don't want to do it too early.

Or should we just buy a new crib? This is not ideal, but would it be best?

Re: Bed Recommendations
We are using a toddler bed, but only because I already had one. If I had to go buy one, I wouldn't bother. Even though bunk beds might cost a bit more up front, it would probably save you money in the long run if you plan to have the kids share rooms for a while. And even then, if you can get the ones that will separate you could continue using them.

Do you have any discount furniture stores in your area? That's where we got our bunk beds and we love them!

Re: Bed Recommendations
right now Ross and Will both sleep in those little plastic toddler beds, that fit a crib mattress, but honesly i dont think it would be weird if the furniture didnt all match, i sort of like that look, but Ikea has really reasonably priced beds, mattress', dressers, you could buy the "unfinished wood" dressers and paint/stain them to match the beds you already have

i would not buy a new crib, my kids are 15 months and 16 months apart and we only own one, so that idea gets a big heck no from me, Cam will be fine in a big boy bed or toddler bed at age 2

Re: Bed Recommendations
See, my friend is also planning #2 and her daughter is about 6 months older than Cam and she's thinking of buying another crib. I thought that was crazy! Since her daughter will conceivably be 2.5 or older when she has her next...but since Cam will be younger I was wondering if I should. Glad to see my thinking was confirmed :)

No real discount stores in the area, but I can also look at kijiji (buying a brand new mattress though). I mean, we don't need it for a while, but I want to get it ready and have Cam accustomed to it so he doesn't see it as being kicked out his crib.

I guess I'm just still ambivalent if a toddler bed is worth it...but if we have #3, then it will get used again since I would want a similar spread between #2 and #3. So conflicted! At least I don't have to make a decision today lol!

Re: Bed Recommendations
Im not entirely sure that a toddler bed is really "necessary" but we switched our boys into them at like 14-15 months old so i wanted something really low to the ground because i was worried about them falling out - so thats why we got those

Re: Bed Recommendations
Both my girls learned to crawl out of their crib by 18 months. So, not wanting them to fall from crib rail height we put them in a bed. We transitioned right to a twin sized bed for both of them. I didn't see the point of buying an extra bed for a short period of time.

Just a caution about bunk beds, think about when you will need a child in the top bunk and the age of the child. Current recommendations are that the child should be at least 6 before sleeping in a top bunk. Personally though, I love bunk beds and even bought DD2 a set even though we don't have anyone sharing rooms any more. Right now we have left the ladder off so no one can climb up there and its just a space for her stuffed animals to sleep, eventually we'll put the ladder on and let her up there but I've seen way too many broken arms and collar bones from falls of the top bunk.

Re: Bed Recommendations
I completely agree about the bunk beds...I don't know the ages when someone will be up top...but as we want 3, and have 3 bedrooms, 2 will be sharing at some point. Or good for sleep overs. I fell off mine when I was younger, never broke anything. Good idea about the ladder for sure!
