new and looking for advice
Hi there! My name is Michelle and I have been on JM for a while now with our new baby on the way. But I notice this forum and thought I might be able to find some assistance.
DS is 9 and has combined type nonaggressive adhd. He is medicated and for the most part pretty easy to handle. My frustration is mornings, getting ready for school. The medicine hasn't kicked in yet and he just doesn't focus to get ready. I can wake him up, make sure he is getting dressed, go take a shower and come back and he is just finishing getting dressed. I get frustrated and yell at him that he needs to get moving then I feel bad because I know he really can't help it.

Has anyone found ways to help their child focus and stay on task? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Re: new and looking for advice
Incentives work very well for children diagnosed with ADHD. Have you considered using a behavior chart to motivate your son to get ready for school? You can list the things he needs to do in the morning without being told to do them (try to keep it short and simple) in order to earn a reward that day. He might be able to earn things like extra time on the computer, playing a game with you, getting an ice cream, etc. You can work on shorter term rewards in the beginning and then gradually work towards bigger incentives for achieving his morning tasks over longer periods of time. It might also be helpful to get him an alarm clock so he can get himself out of bed in the morning.

I hope this helps!

I would agree with the incentives part. My son gets really motivated when he knows that he can only play on his DS if he gets ready by a certain time. It really helps.

Re: new and looking for advice
Hi, I am new this JM and looking for help for my sister with her grandson and other friends that have children with ADHD. I have heard of making to do list for adults, but didn't think of one doing for children. Thank you so much for the information.

Re: new and looking for advice
Just stopped back..I read on another board a lady who's son was woke up by an alarm clock for school. But, did much better in the morning if she woke him up instead. Maybe you could try the alarm clock on the weekend? Seems from the things I have been reading now. It's so much work for everyone trying to figure out what will work and won't. What can trigger kids with this disorder.

my son has an alarm clock that wakes him up to country music he loves it and i do the chart for him as well, it semi works, he gets to buy toys when he saves up enough money from his chores.

Guess we need to figure out our childs taste in music too? :-) More I have read on this..getting up earlier and a relaxed morning seems to help a lot also.
Mommy, I think that anything that works semi would help a little bit doesn't it? Or is it more stressful having go by the chart? Do you use an eraser board?
