Thinking about all that stuff is kind of scary, considering I am horrible with money and can't budget my way out of a paper bag - heck, the only way my daughter and I make it now is because I make good money, but it's not so good when you add the estimated $7000 a year estimated newborn cost to it! And then starting to pay rent again after 6 months of catching up on lawyers bills? I don't think so! I have NO idea how I'm going to make it!

I have a cool website that you can get most baby stuff for free.

The only thing is is that you have to be willing to give stuff away too.

hey ladies,

I need some help/advice! I have recently found out i am pregnant and the past two weeks have been great just being excited but now everything is sinking in and my bf and I are starting to freak out about costs. on a monthly basis how much do things cost on average? A friend of his mom's told him that diapers and wipes cost her like 400/mo and that made him freak out! we are already having a lot of people give us things and i know we will get a lot of things to start out with at our shower but could anyone out there give me a rough idea on how much things would cost monthly? i would really appriciate it.....Thanks!

Those who are worried about costs total cost for a year with my daughter hasn't come close to $4-5000. It all depends on your choices. We've only spent around $1500 per year (she's two now). Breastfeeding costs nothing. Diapers & wipes cost us probably $100-150/month for the first few months, but it decreases over time. Now we spend less than $50/month. Food costs more if you buy all the little jars, less if you just feed them real food that you've pureed or mashed. Furniture can cost a fortune, or you can buy it on discount, second-hand, or borrow from a family member. Strollers don't have to cost a fortune either, we found a Peg Perego travel system for $100 at a yard sale. Don't go crazy with expensive electronic toys, they don't know the difference when they're small anyway and do better with simple toys. Buy your clothes from thrift shops, or put the word out that you're looking for hand-me-downs.

Good luck and don't worry about breaking the bank!

WOW I can't imagine how much I spent on my first 6 kids
in the first year and far as my grandson I have no idea
because I splurged, however with this baby I will try and
keep a record and come back and tell everyone hopefully
I won't forget. If you have the money to spend then go for it
but if your on a shoe string budget there are so many
agencies that will offer help even for those who want to
breastfeed but can't there's a program called La Leche
League that takes breastmilk and store it for mothers
who have difficulty breastfeeding their babies.

This is a great list, with a TON of great suggestions, but I have to add in something about formula costs. (Unless you have WIC) (We didn't)

My daughter was a preemie, born with several feeding issues, 2 of them being severe allergies and reflux. The absolute only thing she could tolerate eating, was Nutramigen formula. She could not BF, and yes, we did try very hard to make it work.

Nutramigen is about $25 for a 16 oz can of powder. We went through 2-3 cans a week, for the sake of being VERY conservative, and taking into account we did use a bit less when she was very small....

8 cans a month.....

$25 times 8 cans......$200 per month.....

times 12 months.........

$2400.00 on formula alone for us.
Ella, age 10
Abby, age 6
Max, age 3

My parents kept the crib, cradle, and changing table that they used when my younger sister Jacqueline and I were babies 18 years ago. My older half-sister Kimberly just had a baby and my dad gave the crib, cradle, and changing table to her. My nephew, Asher, will still be using the furniture when my baby is born. The only way I will be able to have furniture for my baby is if I live with Kimberly and the two babies share the furniture. However, I have been bleeding since Wednesday. I am worried that I might have a miscarriage.

Oh great, I'm only 5 weeks along and just trying to focus on finishing my first trimester. Yesterday I calculated that my income will drop by 80% while on maternity leave - YIKES! I knew that this would cost money but I hadn't added it up. This week has been full of suprises for me!
