In case you haven't hear the first "abortion commercial" aired thsi week in Britain. To be fair I took quotes about it from both sides. The first link will take you to the video. It is not graphic & requires no warnings. As the first article states it says very little (it never mentions abortion) & frankly I didn't understand the big debate about it - but I thought I could bring it here & find out here why it's such a huge deal maybe?
Marie Stopes International, a women’s reproductive health care organization in Britain that is similar to America’s Planned Parenthood, ran a commercial on British TV on Monday night that had everyone aflutter. What, pray tell, was the problem? Could it be shocking imagery, like the images of bloody, aborted fetuses which can regularly be seen in public on sidewalks, on college campuses, and outside abortion clinics?
In fact, the commercial showed a couple of melancholy-looking women as the words “Are you late?” flash on screen and a voice over says, “If you’re pregnant and not sure what to do, Marie Stopes International can help.” Very radical and crazy stuff, I know.
Do you think Marie Stopes International’s ad is more or less effective than an anti-abortion ad like the ones starring Tim Tebow and his mom, Pam Tebow, for the conservative group Focus On The Family, which ran during the 2009 Superbowl?
This Is The Abortion Ad British Pro-Lifers Got So Upset About | The Frisky

London, England (LifeNews.com) -- British television viewers will see an ad promoting abortions for the first time on TV tonight on Channel 4. However, a pro-life legal group is hoping a last-minute legal action can stop the television ads for the Marie Stopes International abortion business. The Committee of Advertising Practice and the Broadcast Committee on Advertising Practice allowed rules changes that paved the way for the new ads.
Without the television and radio commercials, MSI has relied on magazines, taxi and bus ads, and advertising through alternative newspapers.
The ad will run on Channel 4 after 10:00 p.m. but the Christian Legal Centre informed The Sun newspaper it hopes to block what it calls an advertisement for the "destruction of human life."
"Members of the public will be enraged that such adverts are allowed to be beamed into their living rooms, especially as early as 10.10pm, when very many teenagers are around," CLC director Andrea Minichiello-Williams told the newspaper.
"Over 200,000 abortions take place each year in the UK and the figures are not falling. So-called 'family planning' is a multimillion-pound industry and should not be aided by TV advertising," she said. "The notion that the destruction of human life can be advertised freely on TV as a service to the public is outrageous."

I don't think that the ad was very clear, perhaps they are worried about women calling in and being talked into an abortion? The ad runs more like a counciling service being offered to help women know all their options. Since this company needs to "drum up abortion" numbers they would more likely be talking women into an abortion vs helping them look at all options.

I don't have a problem with it at all, except that it sounds like the ad is extraordinarily vague. From the clip you posted, you can't even tell immediately whether they are advertising an abortion service or an adoption service (or even just a welfare or medical service for pregnant moms). Women might call hoping to find the latter, and then end up getting the former unexpectedly (which could be an additional emotional stressor). I'm not sure why they wouldn't just add a caption at the bottom or something just identifying the service they are offering.

Thank you to the SSMC makers for my beautiful siggies!

I dont see how it's an abortion ad at all. It's an add for a company that looks very similar to Planned parenthood. Just because they offer abortion as an option there, doesn't make the commercial for abortion

I don't see the problem either. If they are like Planned Parenthood they offer everything from, yes abortion, to adoption to help to become a parent. I think people are upset because one of the options isnt THEIR view.
