Hi everyone

My name is Emma, i'm 24 & have a 14mo DD - Gaby. I found out on Christmas Eve that I'm (unexpectedly) pregnant with #2.

In 1997 I was diagnosed with epilepsy & put on medication (tegratol) to control the seizures (which only occurred in my sleep). I was able to go off them after 4 years, however after I had my daughter, I noticed that I started waking up with the same sensation as I would have when I'd had a seizure those years before. I went to the neurologist & was put back on my medication.

Now I am pregnant - there is a risk of defects when taking the medication, but without the medication, I don't have the control over my 'episodes' that I have these days. I don't actually HAVE seizures now, I guess i just have a mild form of seizure...

So I am having to decide whether to continue with the medication & take extra folic acid - but risk defects, or to stop taking the medication, but have 'episodes' throughout..........

I'm not sure if this is the right board to post on, but I couldn't find one that seemed to be more appropriate...

Definately you are on the right board.

You need to be taking at least 5 mg of folic acid a day. Minimum.

Have you spoken to your doctor? perhaps a smaller dose or a different medicine altogether might be in order.

I am the "who" when you call, "Who's there?"

I put the "D" in lysdexia

Sanity is a cozy lie.

Hey Emma! I totally think you are on the right board. It is so important to get to your dr asap so that you can discuss this w/ him. If the risks outweigh the benefits, I would suggest stopping.
