The past few days my son has been pointing to pictures in books, toys, etc & saying "mama" & "dada"... as if to say "mommy is the blue truck, & daddy is the red car." Sometimes he even clarifies "mama in car". The first time he did this was w/ a picture of a man who did, admittedly, look like daddy but now it doesn't seem to matter.

He has btwn 100-150 words & still uses them w/ normal frequency, so it's not just that everything is mommy/daddy or he doesn't know what things are called. Is this the beginning of pretend play? A new level of communication he is trying to express? Just a weird phase? Did your kids do this & if so, at what age?

He has also begun to "assign" seats, identify who things "belong" to, etc. (Mama drink, baby's chair). Are these things related?

I have no answers for yo, I can say that my 17 month old ls at pictures of cats and calls them dada. She knows her animals and will make sounds for them (dog, cat, cow, bear, snake, etc.) but if you point to a picture of a cat and ask her what it is she says "dada."

It might be association with an action you've done or something you have. My son has been doing similar association for a while. Like my dad always drinks Pepsi, so anytime he sees a Pepsi or the logo he says 'Papa!' Or even less specific, any red truck it's 'Papa!'

Did you show any specific excited / praising reaction when he did that for that first time?
