Did anyone have a biter?

How did you deal with it?

My dd did bite @ times from ages 2-3. I have a friend who's 18 month old is biting & she's so little I dunno what to tell her to do.

Ben never really had a problem with it... not like what I've heard other people talk about. I mean, yeah, he did it. All kids do. We would just say "don't bite" very firmly and put our fingers on his mouth while we said it so he'd know that "bite" is associated with "mouth".

She went through a biting phase from about 12-15 months. It was like nothing I've seen before, though. It was never out of anger or frustration, but always when a child she didn't know approached her/she approached a child she didn't know. At the time, we thought it was excited energy that she didn't know how to deal with. Looking back and knowing what we know about her social anxiety, that probably had a lot to do with it. I think that's key...figuring out *why* the child is biting and going from there.

I like the idea of the fingers in the mouth to help them associate it, because when they're little they don't know what it means.

Ally was a biter when she was around 17-18 months old. At home it ended pretty quick because when she would do it I would grab her face around the mouth and sternly tell her no (I think she only did it twice at home with me). At school it was a problem for about 3 weeks and they tried many things - using a pacifier, separating her, sternly telling her no.
