So yesterday was my brother's memorial, or really Celebration of Life.

The night before I didn't sleep much, mostly due to my acid reflux and food issues. Plus I was having a few contractions that woke me up (I actually started the day thinking I'd need to go to l&d). But DH and I got there to start setting up and shortly after my older brother and his neighbor came as well. We had a nice turn out of people (most of our blood related family lives in other states) and I got to meet his coworkers and catch up with mutual friends I hadn't seen in years. Even my brother's ex-wife and son made it (which we weren't sure if they would).

The only truly sad part (besides my little brother not being here) was when the color guard did their thing (they play taps and then do a presentation of the flag, which was given to me). Pretty much not a dry eye in the house, and I know a person or two had to leave because it was to emotional for them. And then after that I got up to speak (through tears) to tell my rememberance of John and to offer others they could do the same at any point as well if they wanted. Later a few did. And also to tell everyone that today was about celebrating John's life and not being sad.

So that's what we did, remembered the good times, caught up with each other, and had some good food. My brother's closest friends/family all planned the night before to wear Hawaiian shirts and their 'dog tags' (tags with their nicknames on them) to celebrate.

Then after we cleaned up pretty much everyone went out to the cemetery to say goodbye. It was very touching.

By the end of the day though, especially with the poor sleep the night before, I was ready for a nap (which is probably why I'm up so early this morning). Well, that's the update from me.

It sounds like a very lovely tribute to your brother. But I'm glad you are past it, since it probably took an emotional toll on you. Try to get plenty of rest the next few days and rebuild your strength.

(( hugs)) Therese. I'm so sorry for your loss. It does sound like you had a beautiful ceremony and I'm glad you were feeling up to participating fully. I'll keep your family in my prayers.

Yes I got lots of rest yesterday (a big nap and then to bed at a decent time and already got in a nap today). My 'sister' and 'mom' headed out of town this morning. And while I enjoyed their company (and this week would have been harder without my sister), I'm glad to have the house back to ourselves. Thanks ladies.

I'm glad to hear the memorial went well. I like that you celebrated his life that way. I think it's really neat that you got to keep the flag, too, that must mean a lot to you. I know even if it wasn't anyone I knew and loved, I would still be tearing up hearing them do the taps and everything. It's so solemn, and done with such pride and love for the one who died. I bet that was hard to watch. Hugs Therese!

Sounds like a lovely tribute. I can imagine it is nice to have your house back, even though it was nice to have them there with you.

I didn't even think about keeping a tissue or two with me while she played taps, so when the guy came to give me the flag I was so worried I'd have makeup on my hands after wiping away tears. But the flag still looks good and is in it's display box waiting for me to find a place to display it.
