Just after midnight on Sunday morning Tyler woke up coughing. When I went into his room his cough sounded really funny and his chest sounded tight. I laid him on the changing table to put some Vicks BabyRub on his chest and I got really scared. He was making this awful squeaky sound in between coughs, gasping for air, like he wasn't able to breathe. I cuddled him and when the coughing finally stopped his breathing was still very labored. My parents were in town and staying with us, so I went downstairs and woke my mom so she could hear him, and she told me to call the doctor. The nurse on call said that based on his symptoms he needed to be see in the ER within the next 4 hours.

So, we spent about and hour and a half in the pediatric ER and he was diagnosed with croup, which is what we expected. His breathing got a bit better when we were in the cold air, and he got an oral steroid at the hospital. He fell alseep on the way home and slept fine for the rest of the night, thank goodness! We were home by 3 am.

Today he did pretty well, still coughing a lot, but not sounding as badly as it did last night. It took a while for him to fall asleep tonight but so far so good. Fortunately he has his 6 mo check-up tomorrow so that takes care of the ER follow-up visit.

Thanks Lindsey. Yes, he is feeling much, much better now and has even slept through the night the past few nights. You have no idea how scary it was to hear him gasping for air. Sean has had croup a few times and never sounded as bad as Tyler did that night.
