I'm dying to go shopping in the states, but I have no passport... can I still get across??? Will a birth certificate be good enough?? I'm not sure if it matters, but I wanna go to Michigan from Sarnia Ontario. If anyone knows, or knows where I can go online to read please let me know. Thanks

I thought a passport was mandatory now... I had heard something about a special driver's license but I really don't know. I haven't gone across the border since I was little. There's probably more info on the government of Canada website.

I checked on there, and it says a "minimum of a photo ID and birth cert." but my mom has forms (Because she's going to go to school to do something with border cross) and it says a Nexus card or a passport, so I've changed my mind. :0(

i grew up on the border, and i was just back there at x-mas they would really prefer that you have a passport, you can probably cross with photo idea (id probably bring 2 pieces) and a birth certificate, but i can almost guarantee that they will give you a hassle over not having a passport.

if i was in your position i would apply for a passport because soon it will be mandatory to cross by land and its already mandatory if you are crossing by air

This is what you need :

Land and water ports of entry
(Effective June 1, 2009)

Canadian citizens are required to present one of the following valid WHTI-compliant documents when entering the United States by land or water:

* a passport;
* a NEXUS card;
* a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card;
* an enhanced driver's licence (EDL) or enhanced identification card (EIC) from a province where a U.S.-approved EDL/EIC program has been implemented; or
* a Secure Certificate of Indian Status.

Do you have the new Ontario enhanced drivers license? From what I understand you CAN use that. I have one but it is always easier to cross with a passport. It only took about 3 weeks to get both my children's passport recently.

Huge thanks to *Kiliki* for the FANTABULOUS new siggy!!

I don't go there alot, so its probably just a waste of time and money. The last time I went was in I think 2003 LOL.
