Do you play any musical instruments? Did you grow up playing any? Are/will you be sending your children to take any music lessons; do you feel it's important?

I play the cello and piano for my own personal enjoyment. All 3 older kids are in piano lessons 2 times a week with practice time in the schedule. I intend to have the little ones start about age 4 with group classes.

It has been proven that playing a musical instrument in childhood is associated with enhanced verbal ability and nonverbal reasoning skills.

Since Music/Art/Foreign Lang. classes are the first ones removed during tight budget cuts by school districts down here, to me it is crucial that they learn an instrument and a language (or 2). I am fluent in French, English, German and Polish. Kiddos are learning French and we watch some German TV news shows.

I learned Spanish to communicate with my patient base and I know enough Portuguese to ask the basic EMS questions of where does it hurt and show me what is wrong.
And now there are 6....

I wasn't allowed to growing up.

DH played clarinet in HS band. SIL played the piano and her kids are playing piano and then one graduated up to violin.

AJ is very musical - he loves my IL's piano.

PM to see if I am available to make a siggy - decisions will be made on a case by case basis.

I don't play any instruments currently. I played the piano for 3 years in gradeschool. I'll be sending my kids to take lessons, I definitely think it's important. I'd like to introduce them to orchestral music and see what instruments appeal to them. DH played the trombone all through highschool, it's in our basement right now. And he plays the guitar so that'll hopefully be good influence on the kids also.
