Have you or your family ever been to World Youth Day? Have you ever been on a pilgrimage? If so, where did you go? Tell us about your experience!

Yes, DH and I have been to the 2002 WYD in Toronto. We were only 3 months into our relationship at the time and I wasn't even Catholic yet, but even so it was very overwhelming. The Saturday/Sunday even took place only 10 minutes from where my parents live so it was really close too. We stayed in the field overnight, where they built the large WYD Cross, and it was very nice... lots of people arrived from all over the world.

The next day was pouring rain and all our stuff got soaked, there was nowhere to go for cover except for disgusting port-a-potties, so that's where we hid lol and that was the only downside of the event. But seeing Pope John Paul II and being around so many devout people was great! I'd go again but it's not so close to gome this time! lol

Here's a pic.

I've never been to WYD... when did they begin? I don't remember hearing about them back when I was a youth.

We used to live close enough to the EWTN Shrine that we could take day trips there occasionally. That was something like a small "pilgrimage" for us. But never have we really taken one. A friend of ours recently went to Rome (during Holy Week through Divine Mercy Sunday, no less!) and was able to bring back a crucifix that was blessed by Pope Benedict for us. That's probably the closest to Rome we will ever get.

I went to World Youth Day in Rome 2000, preceded by a pilgrimage to different shrines throughout Italy. I met DH on that trip.

Then after WYD, a small group of us carried on to do a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. All of it ROCKED!
