When checking labels for carb content, how many carbs from sugar do you allow? How much is too much? Thanks in advance.

Eek, I don't count sugar. I just count carbs. I know a lot of the girls do count sugar, but I never have gotten into that habit. Hopefully someone else here can answer that for you. Sorry I am no help on this one.

We "TRY" for sugar being less than 30% of the total carbs. So, if you look at the nutrition label, it says "total carbohydrate" 21 g, then below that "Sugars" 3g, so (this is a box of Wheat thins BTW) the wheat thins would be an ok food. On the other hand, a pack of fruit chews I have here is 21g of total carbohydrate, 14g sugar. This would be like 60% of the carbs from sugar. Generally, I would say that is too much, but forget it! You can't keep all the sugar from them I try to limit the amounts of those foods with higher than 30% from sugar. It will help with control. This is similar to the GI index stuff you may have read about. Stuff with lower % of carbs from sugar will be lower GI.

Also--you have to be reasonable. Milk has 15g sugar carbs, 16g total carbs per serving. Are we all going to stop giving milk to our kids? I don't think so. I hope this answers your question.
