Question: Lately, Chris' sugar has been a little high around lunch time. He eats the same thing every morning for breakfast and his teacher assures me he has nothing in between getting to school and lunch. BUT, like today, he tried to walk it off a bit but instead of it going down, it went up. Now, I read somewhere that if there are ketones present and he excercises, it makes his sugar go up. That true? And what do I do? Can we get those ketone tests strips at like Wal-Mart?

Your doctor should give you a prescription for ketone strips. You can get them over the counter at the Walmart or drug store as well, but you should have a prescription on hand for testing ketones. We have to test for ketones if his blood sugar is over 300 or if he is sick. If you have ketones then you will need to follow your doctors protocal for ketone management. How long has Chris been diagnosed? I am sorry that I forgot. If he has ketones he will most likely need extra insulin and need to come home from school (depending on whether they are small, moderate, or large). I would not recommend exercising to get rid of ketones. Ketones can be a clue that you're getting sick or something is going on.

As far as blood sugar going up after walking. Honestly, it is probably just a coincidence. Perhaps he needs his insulin adjusted, perhaps not. If he is staying up at a certain time of the day for 3 or 4 days, you probably need to adjust his insulin. Eventually you kind of just get used to the fact that you can't get perfect numbers. It's the name of the game and I hate it!

Hope that helps,
Teresa
