Cookie base:
1 cup flour
1/2-3/4 cup butter
Nuts if desired

Layer 1
1 pack cream cheese
1 cup icing sugar.

Layers 2, 3, 5 and 6
2 packages Chocolate pudding
2 packages vanilla pudding

Layers 4 and 7
2 tubs cool whip

Chocolate to garnish

in a glass 9x13 baking dish, combine the butter (melted) and flour to form a simple cookie base. This is often done by eye. You'll need enough to cover the bottom. So you might need more flour to get the job done. You could add chopped nuts if you wish.

Bake at 350 about 8-15 minutes. Should be just starting to brown (you don't want this to be hard, just done)

Allow pan to cool before proceeding with the dish. You can stick it in the fridge/freezer once it's cooled enough to touch to speed up the process.

Combine icing sugar and cream cheese. Mixture should be spreadable. Remember, icing sugar doesn't thicken, if you add too much, it will get thinner.

In 2 bowls, prepare the puddings with 1/2 cup less than the called for milk. If you want a firmer dessert, go with less milk.

once cookie crust is cooled, spread the cream cheese layer on.

spread on 1/2 the chocolate pudding
sread on 1/2 the vanilla pudding

Spread on 1 full tub of cool whip

Spread on chocolate pudding
spread on vanilla pudding

Top with remaining cool whip.

Grate chocolate over top. (mom always ensured there was an available chocolate bunny or chocolate santa for this.)

Allow to cool at least 1/2 hour in fridge before serving.

notes: you can make this with real homemade whipped cream. The life of the dessert will be DRASTICALLY reduced if you do. You'll want to make it no more than an hour before serving, and the dish will not save (it will turn watery after a few hours). Cool whip, while not to best option, does allow the dessert to be kept in the fridge for days.

We've tried several cookie layers. Crushed Oreos and graham crackers DO NOT WORK. If you wish to use them, you will need to prepare the dish in a spring form cake pan and line the sides with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

We have added sliced strawberries to the top. While they were a nice touch, they were more for presentation than anything else.
