I am asking ben to get me a sewing machine for my b-day. I am pretty sure I want a singer just cuz I know that is a good brand, but beyond that I don't know anything. I am a beginner but I want to make a few things (quilt/wall hanging, burp cloths) for the little man and I also want to be able to hem my own pants I have made a few things (pillow cases, and christmas stockings), but I did it with bens mom. We aren't on very good terms with his parents right now so I didn't want to have her make all the baby stuff for us or use her machine. Anyway enough rambling...any tips or advise

Thanks Claire for my awesome siggy!!

I would go with a Brother actually. Singer you pay more for it to say Singer, but a Brother has AWESOME reviews. I love mine and you get a lot more features for your money. I can't remember the model number of mine, but it's a project runway edition, and I have no complaints at all with it.

I have an old Singer and it works well, but I also just bought a new Brother (the Project Runway edition 50 stitch) and I LOVE it so far!! I read a ton of reviews and the new Singers just aren't that good from what I've read.

To be honest I don't know much about sewing machines. Mine is at least 10 yrs old, but barely used until now. I have a Brother which I had bought at Wal mart. I think just a basic one would be good to get started.

I have no advice. My mom told me this weekend, that it wasn't too late for me to learn though and to get a Singer if I wanted to get a sewing machine.

Singers used to be great machines but the newer models are plastic and aren't very good. I have a brother too (love it) and I haven't had any problems with it.

I totally agree, newer machines are not made the same way. I'd recommend going to garage sales to see if you can find an older Singer. The women at Tim's work are always trying to get him to sell them my sewing machine, especially since it's too hot for me to use my sewing room right now.
