Did anyone else get a flu shot for their LO? The pedi told me that she would have to come back in about a month for another one. I was wondering if anyone else has heard this before because I never knew babies needed the shot 2 times.

Hmmm, I have never heard of that either but we normally skip the flu shots. I only got them with Brandon because he was a preemie. It's not something I've ever been too worried about.

I only did the flu shots once and it was Belle when she was 2 and they did say she needed two. And that was the only year she had the flu really bad...shortly after the first shot, but before the 2nd.

We went to the Ped. today and I asked him, he said if it's the first time ever that your child has gotten the flu shot than they require a booster a month later. But it's only the first time they get it, following years if you choose to give it to your children, they will only need one

Thanks for the info ladies! I think I am just going to stick to just one. I'm nervous about getting another one now cause she has been super cranky today and i'm wondering if it was the shot that did it.

My pedi explained that they need two because they only give half doses at a time. So, if you get one, I don't think that its the full dose and won't protect as well.

We decided to get Zeb the shot, just because we have no idea what his immune system will be like this winter. I more worried about RSV, but he doesn't qualify for the shots.

My pedi said the same thing, but the whole thing is making me nervous now for some reason. I'm probably thinking too much as usual. Was Zeb cranky after his flu shot? I worry about RSV also. Last winter Kayla got the RSV shots, but the pedi has not mentioned them yet this year. Why wouldn't Zeb qualify? I know they are expensive, but they make such a big deal out of RSV I would think all LO's should be able to get it. If I remember correctly RSV risk is highest November-April.

I copied this from the CDC website...

Vaccine Doses for Children Aged 6 Months Through 8 Years

Children aged 6 months through 8 years require 2 doses of influenza vaccine (administered a minimum of 4 weeks apart) during their first season of vaccination to optimize immune response. In a study of children aged 5 through 8 years who received trivalent inactivated vaccine (TIV) for the first time, the proportion of children with protective antibody responses was significantly higher after 2 doses than after 1 dose.

We decided to pass on the flu shot this year, but my pedi did tell me that they can only give half the dose at one time, that's why they need two.

I get the girls their flu shots. And yes, like others have mentioned, the very first time (in their life) they get the shot, they will need 2 doses. We go back in a week for Mackenzie's 2nd one.
