I really need to clean our carpets. I don't want to use any of the chemicals they sell with the rental machines but I'm not finding anything safe for kids anywhere. Even the store clerks don't know anything about it.

Does anyone have advice on this??

I use a steam cleaning company that uses citrus solvent, it's totally safe and natural. I only clean my carpets once a year or so. If they get a stain, I'll use hot water + vinegar and some Oxy clean to get it out.

I've also used a steam cleaning company though I haven't loved their results so far. Would love any recommendations for companies!

I use the services of cleaning companies as well and I'm pretty happy with it. I like the quality of their work and free time that I have because of them . But if you want to clean your carpets yourself you can read this article about how to do it properly and what you need to use: https://www.hirerush.com/blog/how-to...3-main-stages/ I think it's quiet good.

I suggest, simply use vacuum cleaners that are specialized in cleaning carpets. Just like Bissell vacuum cleaners. I've been trying several vacuum cleaners that are good for carpet cleaning before until I found Bissell at Best Carpet Cleaner 2016: The Complete Guide | Vacuum Top. I must say all guides and proper carpet cleaning were stated there. I hope this helps.

I would say to try the dyson vacuum cleaner! its amazing. Also steam cleaning your carpets once or twice a year is a good idea. Make sure the company doesn't use anything with harsh chemicals in it. Good luck!

I always use vinegar and water in a spray bottle to clean the carpet. It's organic and safe around the kids.

I agonized about replacing our bagged canister vacuum cleaner (yeah, I know, first-world problem....) because I really didn't want to go bagless, but except for Mieles ($$$) all the bagged canisters got horrible reviews.

Based on Cozzy recommendation, I went with a Shark Powered Lift-Away, and I absolutely love it, notwithstanding that it's bagless! (We empty it in a garbage can in the garage). It's basically a convertible -- it can be an upright or a canister, so much easier for the kids to use it and to lug it up and downstairs. We have two cats and three females with long hair in our house, and it scoffs at the hair. The various attachments are great. I think we got the "pet bundle" or similar, which has a small motorized head that is perfect for our carpeted stairs. We have a mix of carpet, area rugs, and hardwood floor and it works great for all of those.

I would prefer to use a carpet rake and follow its guide here https://itday.com/kitchen/top-6-best...-buyers-guide/ for dry dirt first and then use any deep carpet cleaners like Hoover or Bissel for a tidy clean.

To say, carpet cleaning is the most irritating task. And it's funny, there are hundreds of tips online to make your carpet the best to look. But not all work. Some tips will make your carpet sag. So it's very difficult to know the best tips which work. But with my own home experience, I got to know few things work pretty well. Check out these:
  • Take your husband's permission and use his shaving cream because it removes nearly any type of stains.
  • Use Hydrogen peroxide, let it stay on stains for 30 minutes and after that wash it with water.
  • Clean the carpet regularly. It is the most important one. If you have pets in your home then it is much more difficult to grab that pet hair. I hope this tips will help you.
