I thought when I delivered my son that my sugar numbers were back to normal in the hospital but maybe I'm not remembering correctly. This time around they're a little slower to go back to normal. It's only been five days after the birth of my daughter but I'm still getting some higher numbers like a 112 fasting and a 160 two hours after eating.

When are your sugar numbers suppose to go back to normal again? I know I'm at risk for developing Type II or become insulin resistance after having two GD pregnancies so I'm very concerned about my numbers.

Well I have become type 2 after having 2 pregnancies with Gestational Diabeties and my insulin sensativity is 30... After my second pregnancy with GD my sugars were back to normal almost immediatly.. with in 24 hours.

It took a long time. I'm pretty sure mine did not go back to normal until every last ounce of hormone was out of my body, so at least six weeks if not more. In the hospital after birth I think I spiked to about 250 after my meals. Not so good, and I didn't even check my fasting though I can't imagine that was much better.

I actually asked my doctor this question Monday, and she said it starts immediately. Basically the placenta is the source of insulin resistance, so once it's out, your sugar normalizes again. I'm a Type 1 diabetic, and she said she'll be cutting my insulin dose in half the very first day after my son is born, and I'm very happy about that!

Thank you Vicki for my awesome siggy!!

I had GD with both of my pregnancies and my numbers went down a day after I had my kids.. I was also on insulin when I was pregnant..

I honestly wouldn't worry about it just yet.. At your 6 week post partum check up, have them check your A1C or do another Glucose test..
