How do you know when to resort to Gripe Water? Today Summer has been fussy BUT she seems to calm when she's on the boob... however I KNOW I don't have enough milk because she starts to get really fussy after about 10-15 minutes on the boob... I switch to the other and same thing. Once she's done with both boobs she's STILL fussy. She's never been like this before. She's doing this thing where she moves her head all around with her mouth open like she can't find the nipple... but the nipple is right in her mouth. So I've pulled her off, gave my nipple a squeeze and nothing

Anyhow, I'm not sure if the fussy-ness is the wanting to nurse/lack of milk, or gas... I'm not sure what to do. I know I should nurse nurse nurse to increase supply, but when she's freaking out at the nipple because nothing is coming out I'm at a loss of what to do. I can't really pump while she acts like this to try to increase supply because I'm too busy trying to comfort her... I just don't know what to do...

I think it's a milk issue and not gas...if she's reaching for your nipple.however, you can always just try the gripe water just in case. Can your SO/DH comfort her while you pump?

No milk from a nipple squeeze doesn't mean there is nothing in there for the baby

It may not have anything to do with no milk coming out. Anna will nurse for comfort, but when she is full or needs to burp she will start pulling off the boob and fussing because her tummy hurts - and yet still wants to nurse because it's nice and something is bothering her.

When I notice her starting to do this I take her up and start covering my bases - burp, diaper, swaddle and rock, then she falls asleep and everything is all better

she is almost 6 weeks, maybe she is having her 6 week growth spurt a little early? If so the best thing you can do is get her to nurse as much as possible. But maybe she just needs to burp as well.

Don't assume you're not making milk because nothing comes out...there's always milk in your breasts. I'm guessing if she was fine until recently that she's going through a growth spurt. Melanie did the same thing and after a day or two she was back to her usual self. Just nurse as much as she wants and your supply will increase.

I really do think she is going through a growth spurt... and I KNOW I shouldn't worry about supply, but I always do... I'm a super paranoid mom LOL it's just weird how she acts... and it's always around the 10-15 mark, that's why I felt like I'm "running out" and she's getting upset because of it....

Jackson will get like that sometimes... mouth right on the nipple but confused about what to do when he clearly knows how to latch on normally. I haven't actually used gripe water yet, but the Little Remedies gas relief drops always seem to calm him. Even if it's not always gas, it distracts him and I think he likes the taste too.
