So, I'm at the Dr's office with my little man. This lady starts talking about feeding her 8 month old cereal and how she started when the baby was 3 weeks. I've heard your not supposed to do this. Any thoughts, experiences?? She says her baby has slept soundly since 3 weeks!!!

She kinda seems crazy. Get this, she says she also gives her daughter water after every feeding and has pretty much from day one. Her reasoning, she doesn't listen to what Dr's say and just goes by what her mom did. She also says she doesn't read anything. Lol. I remind her that we also used to lay babies flat on their backs but we don't now.

Lol. Another young lady due next month says she's going to try it because her mother also fed her cereal as an infant. So, I tell her to just do her research... Nothing wrong with following mom's advice, just play it safe. Anyway, an older woman says to the lady who feeds her child cereal "you went with common sense huh?" I'm just shaking my head.

Oh, those poor babies. Seriously, it's terrible for their immature digestive systems. Breastmilk or formula for 6 months... too much research shows the benefits of waiting and the harm for starting early.

Oh sheesh. I believe in breastmilk/formula only until 6 months at least. Baby isn't ready for anything else until then.

Yes! Her baby is 8 months so she's fine but I told her, I'm sure they make the recommendation of no cereal for a reason... Your baby is fortunate, others have choked.

My 4 year old we tried on cereal at 6 weeks because of his reflux, but he hated it, so we stopped it. All of my kids have been started on solids by GI at 4 months because they all have had terrible reflux. If it wasn't for that though, it would be 6 months of just breastmilk/formula. That said, my oldest that they tried on cereal at 6 weeks, didn't eat solids really until he was a year old, he would flat out refuse anything else.

That's just being lazy and not wanting to feed as frequently as is necessary.

Too dangerous. Infants should not be sleeping through the night, it is one cause of SIDS. The stomach is permeable until 6 months or so, so feeding food can cause all sorts of allergies and stomach problems later on.

Well, you couldn't tell this chick. She asked me if Michael was my first. I hate when ppl ask in such a way because they're pretty much saying "I know more than you because I have children." Interesting to find out I was right. I actually thought some would say they've given their baby cereal. Apparently, the lady I was speaking to had very favorable results.

I don't plan on starting solids until at least six months. Maybe even 7 or 8! And I don't think I'll be using cereal at all when I do start... I don't think there is many health benefits to it. But that's just my opinion

You can do a little bit of rice cereal at 4 months, I know lots of moms who have done it and I've taken care of many who did, and they were just fine.

"Just fine" is subjective. And just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

See, Morgan P, that's why I posted this thread and thanks for your input. I'm sure the lady in the Dr's office is among many women who give their baby cereal. I'm a new mom. For us, sometimes you don't know what's right and what's wrong. I'm sure if I ask my mom, 38 years ago, she gave me cereal.
