What would you do if your child decided they hated their name and wanted to go by something else?

I would probably go along with it, if it went on for long enough.

I'd try to get to the root of WHY they hated their name first. Both of my boys have names with a lot of significance attached to them, so it wouldn't be easy for me to just let them toss their given names aside. I'd probably tell them that others could call them whatever they wanted, but that as their MOTHER I was still calling them by their given name, and that if they still felt the same way when they turned 18, then they could legally change it.

If she just wanted to be called something else, I'd most likely go along with it too, if I could tell she was really earnest about it.
If she wanted a legal name change, I'd be pretty reluctant, I think. We put a lot of thought into her name. I think it would also depend on what she wanted to change it to, and why.

I would struggle with it. Like others said, I put a lot off effort into their names and they are sentimental. That being said, I would be sensitive to why they hated them.

I have to agree. I would listen to their reasoning and then explain the meaning behind their names. It would hurt but if they were absolutely sure they wanted their names changed I would allow it. They would have to do all the research about what to do and how to change it on their own. (Basically, I would be trying to sway them away from it. If they go through all the trouble to do the research... then it would be proof enough of how bad they really want it changed and that is good enough for me)

It would depend on the reason.
