Sorry to be MIA but on Saturday ruby came down with nasty ulcers in her diaper area. We went to the ER and they said it was impetigo. By the time we got home she had a fever of 102. She's on antibiotics but we aren't seeing much change and the fever is still there, so we are headed to the DR this evening. So stressful. She is clingy and sad so I am MIA until things get better.

So it doesn't seem to be impetigo since she didn't respond to the antibiotics. The dermatologist sidnt think it looked like classic impetigo either. She said it may have been at one point, bit what she was seeing was a terrible advanced diaper rash which may have been triggered by yeast. It's been cultured though so we will know either way tomorrow. For now, I stopped the antibiotics and I'm doing a very strict diaper changing regime every hour. Rinse out a natural wipe with water, dip it in Vaseline to wipe her, nystatin cream, thick diaper cream, thick layer of powder every hour. Then in a few days I start an anti inflammatory cream. I hope this all works and the culture comes back negative so we can stay away from antibiotics. Apparently her fever could have been triggered by this bad rash.

Poor baby. Can't imagine the pain and discomfort she is going through and hugs to you momma too since she is probably taking it all out on you. Hope it all clears up very quickly.

For those of you not on Facebook, I have an update. The culture came back positive for HERPES type 1!!! Type 2 is the kind that causes genital herpes, but somehow Ruby got exposed to a cold sore down in her diaper area! No one in my family who has changed her has had any cold sores, but the more I think of it my mom had a cold sore recently and she must have kissed Ruby's hand and then Ruby must have scratched down there with the hand while I was changing her. Ugh. Here I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out how she got this. I have had them in the past, but not since she was born. Although I have read that it's possible for the virus to be "active" and contagious without symptoms. So it's possible that it was me.

I have been reading up on it and it explains everything. The high fever going on a week, not being responsive to antibiotics, and new sores popping up.

This thing has just been god awful, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. She started an antiviral today, I am told that things should start to improve in a few days. The rash doesn't look as angry, but it still looks very terrible. My poor baby has COLD SORES all over her private parts!

To top it off, my kitty soul mate appears to be gone forever. Our cat Charlie got out on Wednesday and never came home. I am so, so depressed about it. He was seriously the best cat, ever. He would let Ruby pull on his tail and fur and be rough and he would never even flinch, he would just purr and take it. My boys just adored him. I can't believe he is gone. We've looked everywhere in bushes and grass around our home and in fields across the street but we haven't found his body. He has never missed a meal before, so he would never just up and go on an adventure like this. Coyotes, car accident, someone may have taken him, I don't know. I am just so sad and now my other kitty has become depressed without him.

I am so exhausted from this week. So many doctors and specialists and medications and wrong diagnoses. And then my cat. It's been an awful week for me. I am ready for some happiness again.

Oh no, just saw this. Never heard of this type of herpes. Poor Ruby. Hope the sores disappear quickly. Any sign of the cat? Big hugs to you. Hope this is a better week for you.
