I have recently started choking in my sleep. The first time it happened was maybe 2-3 weeks ago and again last night. It's terrifying, I wake up choking, coughing, and unable to catch my breath for what seems like a minute! I have never had this problem until now. Is this normal?

Sounds like reflux. This is my third pregnancy and I would have that issue, waking up choking on my reflux until I went on meds for it. I currently am taking Prevacid and it helps SOOOO much!

I've not had this happen. Sounds pretty scary. I have heard of reflux causing that sort of thing before. Hope you figure it out!

I agree that it doesn't sound like sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing while you sleep and so your body wakes up. Lots of people don't even know they have it and only find out because they go for a sleep study (due to not feeling rested, etc). You usually fall immediately back to sleep. I know a couple people that have it and none of them have ever described what you are describing.

People (myself included) also get a lot of excess saliva during pregnancy, I wonder if this can be a result of that? How is your head positioned when you sleep?

I sleep with 2 fairly thick pillows so my head is somewhat upright, its not completely flat. I am not sure what position I'm lying in when it happens, but it is definitely scary. I'm not sure if its reflux, I don't have that burning feeling in my throat or chest when it happens, and I have had issues with reflux when I was little..nothing ever like this!
