Since I was induced after 41 weeks with my previous two babies, I wasn't expecting Aiden to come out so close to his due date. At my 39 week appointment on the Friday before my due date, my OB said that I could go anytime - I was at least 2 cm dilated and she stretched me to 3 cm. Nothing happened over the weekend. Tuesday (my due date) I felt fine. I took the boys to the mall, and just did some normal things. I did manage to eat a whole fresh pineapple that day - just thinking I would try to get something going if I could do it that simply. I crawled in bed with my boys about 11 p.m. and was woken up over night with some pain similar to gas pain. I didn't think much of it until I came downstairs to use the bathroom at 5a.m. and I started having time-able contractions. Those were about 45 sec. each, 7 min. apart, and lasted for just about an hour. The contractions spaced out a bit and then would get closer and then would space out again. Michael wanted to go to the hospital, but I didn't want to go if it was just false labor especially since we had our other two boys to worry about. We did start getting things ready and fed the boys breakfast and got them dressed. I was still a little unsure about going to the hospital, but when we pulled into the hospital parking lot I had a bad contraction, so we went in. When I went to the desk to checked in, they just took me right to a labor and delivery room and told me to get into a gown, etc. I was still so unsure that I was really in labor. They hooked me up to the monitors and then checked me. The nurse asked how much I was dilated at my last appointment, and I said 3 cm and she said "well now you're 5-6 cm and very stretchy." I was expecting her to say something more like "well, you're just 2cm" or something like that. They weren't going to send me home at 5-6 cm dilated especially since it was my 3rd baby. Michael came in with the boys so they could say goodbye to me, and then he took them to their uncle's house so their grandma and uncle could watch them. When Michael came back an hour later around 10:45 a.m. they checked me again and I was 7-8 cm. Oh boy! We really were going to have a baby that day. Totally wasn't expecting it because my contractions still weren't that bad, long, or close together. We waited a little longer, and the nurse convinced us to have her call the doctor in to break my water. The nurse said that baby would probably just come out then - that's basically what happened with Austin (DS2). So the doctor came and broke my water - nothing happened....we waited through a few more contractions but I still didn't feel the need to push. I was fully dilated and Aiden was in a good position, so they told me just to push. I did and after a few really hard pushes he was out. They put him right on me and we got to snuggle under warm blankets for a good long time. Overall it was a great birth experience.
Some interesting things about his birth:
They told me afterwards that he came out hand first, super hero style. His Hmong name/middle name means hero/savior.
I had the same labor nurse that I had with Austin (DS2). I loved her then and she was great this time as well.
I didn't have to be constantly monitored - that was so nice.
They didn't put an IV or even an IV port on me - it was great!
The day Aiden was born was my OB's day off. I was a little sad, but another doctor from her practice came and did just fine.
I wanted to make sure the cord wasn't clamped until it stopped pulsing, and they let me make sure that happened.
We got lots of skin to skin cuddle time and he didn't have to be in the warmer and they didn't take him away from me after birth until I was ready.
I kind of regret having them break my water because when my water broke naturally with Austin, he just sort of came out and I didn't have to push or anything. I was thinking of my other boys, though, when I agreed to have them break my water. I didn't want labor to last forever and them be away from mom or dad all day.

Thank you Jaidynsmum for my beautiful siggy!
